Wow - good to see that someting that makes sense is taking control.

I haven't seen any major changes. I do see a lot of fluctuation on availability; I recently snagged a FCM upgrade on CMH-ATL-LAX for $179 on top of the $129 one-way fare. It got me onto the 77L on the ATL-LAX segment which seemed like a decent value to try that product out.

That FCM fare isn't consistently available but it pops up about 1/10 times when I book one of those trips. I don't know if it's inventory control or just true randomness. When the deal is good I take it. ^

Hrmm... I put in those dates to check and it still comes back at 1400+
Also used flexible search and the lowest dates are still 1400.

Maybe something broken again with the DL search engine?

MSPeconomist Jan 23, 2012 7:20 pm

During the last several months, I've been seeing these fares on some routes but not on other routes. For example, $414 for MSP-CHI RT in FC, MDP-DEN RT in FC for about $600, but approximately $1700 for MSP-DCA RT in FC, which might not be a good example due to all the government fares on this route.

However, it has been a long time, probably from around spring/summer, since I have last seen the "want to travel in FC" box when searching for flights, even when further checking yields a very attractive A or P fare that does not cost much more than coach for the flights I was considering.

Let's hope that some MBA, hired out of college about 18 months ago, is hiding out in the john, dodging his DL boss... who is looking for an explanation of why the FCM theory, which sounded brilliant 12 months ago, has not proven out to be the next get rich quick scheme.

That MBA probably moved on to another job long ago, before it was discovered that his or her idea didn't work very well.

Well done! That seems like money well spent on that route.

Can't comment on FCM other than to say my UG % is down.

Hopefully that will improve in March when those that did not make the cut drop off - Sorry guys (I am losing my SPG plat so I know how you feel).

MSPeconomist Jan 24, 2012 3:41 pm

Upgrades are not helped by DL's decision to remove a row of FC from the A319s and now A320s.

Nothing about airline tickets makes sense, see buying paint from an airline for more details.

Maybe we'll start seeing the V inventory go up?

Wishful thinking.

I'd love for some insiders to comment with their own analysis on this topic

Just offered (and accepted) a (relatively) low buy up from DTW to LAS for a last-minute trip. I don't think it is dead. I think there has been some tinkering in all fares and fare buckets lately. Fares do seem a bit higher-than-normal.

MSPeconomist Jan 24, 2012 4:28 pm

I think DL is still experimenting. The fare offers are all over the place without any apparent pattern, unless this is the pattern they want strategically.
