Flying for free is a great employee perk, and I support that. But no employee should go into First/Biz on a free pass (unless on airline business) before a paying passenger.

My Opinion.

Anyone with a Y/B/M fare can upgrade with miles or SWUs. PM and DM will typically not get automatically upgraded regardless of fare, except in full coach situations.

As a former NW employee, I've never flown FC/BE so much until two years ago. It's a benefit for working for Delta whether one is a contract employee or non-union employee.

Benefits like non-rev travel are a perk for Delta employees. Keep the employees happy, keeps the union out. Unhappy employees will make the service nosedive.

They don't. Any passenger who is paying for BE is assured of getting the seat.

+1

General Question: In your company, do employees get free perks that your customers do not? If I were your customer, and wanted one of those perks, how would I get that? A. Get a job at your company. B. Pay for it.

At the first ATL DO, when the question of whether or not the phantom upgrades that NW had implemented in the last year or so came up, Jeff R indicated that he thought it was a great idea and a great marketing tool and that they would look at ways to bring them back, maybe. And Bob S, who had implemented them at NW indicated that he had taken some grief from employees whose pass travel was more likely to be in coach because of the phantom upgrades of platinums (and some golds, I guess).
Haven't heard much since then. I have been fortunate to snag some international opups when the back has been oversold.

One has to ask about a revenue model that provides free elite travel to non-paying individuals vice paying customers. Ever wonder why your PMUs are so hard to use?

Many of us get that this is contrived to keep the union out @:-)

I'd be more concerned that it means J loads are so low that non-revs are so easily getting seats up front. I also am having a hard time squaring this with Jeff R.'s assertion on availability and buy-through on award and Y/B/M upgrade flights.

Still, allowing cheap at-gate upgrades erodes the J cabin model.

Enough, there is no need of start of this dead-end debate again.
This is the Delta today, and have been like this for a while.
Somehow it is working and will continue to do so. IF you don't like the system, there are plenty of other carriers out there.

Actually I am finding more issues on people, who are demanding goods & services for free when they didn't pay for it. What kind of business model is that?

The reports of Delta's success have been greatly exaggerated, sure it has had a couple good quarters, it remains to be seen if this is sustainable.

Hello, its called a frequent flyer program. Airlines do it to build brand loyalty and at least miles are earned.

Can we lock this thread? This thread has turned south as usual when it deals with this subject.

actually, let's keep this thread open and sticky it. that way people that want to get free upgrades to a $7k product when paying a TATL sLUT fare can hide behind complaints re: business models, etc.

Hello, I'm 190K BIS DM this year, and I don't complain with this.
this doesn't mean Skymiles is the best program out there, but also haven't seen a program offers complimentary upgrades (to J or F on Trans-Oceanic flights, under regular operating conditions) to their elites.
