Somehow it is working and will continue to do so. IF you don't like the system, there are plenty of other carriers out there.
The reports of Delta's success have been greatly exaggerated, sure it has had a couple good quarters, it remains to be seen if this is sustainable.

Hello, its called a frequent flyer program. Airlines do it to build brand loyalty and at least miles are earned.
