I know that you are all counting departures but on a side note, I am certain I saw a story that showed MSP ahead of DTW for the summer months on passengers handled.

I wonder where JFK and LGA would be if they were considered to be a single combined hub. Maybe #4?

Keep in mind this thread was started in 2010. It got bumped.

I've always been curious of why AMS and CDG were considered DL hubs. Those are KLM and Air France hubs. A hub is s connecting complex. You can't make a Delta to Delta connection in AMS or CDG. Now, if you referred to them as Skyteam hubs then you would be correct.

Delta seems to have two types of hubs. Those focused on connections and those focused on O/D passengers. Of course there is a mixture of both at all hubs but some are weighted more heavily in connections and some in O/D.

Connection Focused: ATL, JFK, CVG, SLC, MSP, DTW, SEA

O/D Focused: LGA, LAX, RDU, BOS

When did RDU become a hub? At best it's a focus city. How about BOS?

I would say that CVG is O/D focused. Lots of RJs and only flights to specific business-heavy destinations. Some connections through CVG make sense, but DL wouldn't keep a hub there at this point unless planes were being filled by P&G, GE, etc.

"Size" is not a recognised metric.

Are you talking about number of passengers? Number of flights? Number of available seats? Or something more esoteric like number of ASMs?

You have a good point. But CVG is usually one of the first offered if I'm going to ORD, STL, MEM. I have to dig deeper if I want a connection to the west coast or northeast.

Yeah RDU is more of a focus city but I figure there has to be at least some connections in order for 3 RDU-MCO flights and a CDG flight to operate. BOS has way too much international capacity to work on O/D alone I would think so I'm guessing a good amount is connecting traffic.

Sure, a lot of BOS traffic is connecting at the hubs on the other end. But the amount of traffic connecting at BOS is likely very small. Ditto for RDU.

Don't forget LAX! I hope that doesn't mean that we are considered a real hub for points purposes....

Summary of linked "Peak-Day Departures" (TATL/TPAC for CDG, AMS, NRT):

ATL: 1028
DTW: 536
MSP: 442
SLC: 289
MEM: 221
LAX: 175
CVG: 169
LGA: 161
JFK: 151
AMS: 30
CDG: 30
NRT: 27
