Cash out at the casino

Hi. Searching didn't yield any recent info, most was circa 2011...

Are you still able to use your on board account that's tied to a credit card to manufacture points via the casino before cashing out? Mainly interested in the policies on Carnival and NCL...

Charge chips or credits for the casino to the cruise account (which is tied to a miles earning credit card) then cash out. Free miles if there is no surcharge or cash advance fee.

WRONG

It used to be free, but now they charge a fee of up to 2.5% for cash advance at casinos....each line is different. For example our upcoming trip on princess has $1500 a day limit and if you wind up cashing most of it back in they will not likely front you more each day...in the old days you could get just under 10k (have to declare over 10k to customs) at no charge and then pay your creditcard to cover the charges...now most are wise and have some kind of fee that makes it unprofitable for point generation....each line has specifics listed on their site.

I just got off of HAL (part of Carnival) and you were able to charge $2000.00 a day to your room card. I didn't do the max but I did do $4500. over the cruise and before I disembarked I went to the cashier window and got the cash. I of course had to pay the ship bill for the casino charge plus a few other charges but as I put it on a cashback card I got that back.

I am going on Princess this month and already confirmed that you can charge $3000.00 a day, $21,000 a week to your cabin charge. There is NO charge for this. You again can do this by loading your room card at the slot machines. You are not forced to play, you can simply load the card to the max per day and then cash out the card at the end of the cruise. I don't have any intention to do the max but its nice to know its available

If you play at the Craps table they do charge a cash advance but loading onto your key card at the slots does not incur a cash advance fee.

Now Crystal Cruise on the other hand used to give you $300. per person per day in CASH and charge it to your room. They now have stopped that and if you get cash from the casino cashier there is a service fee.

Last time I was on Carnival they got upset at me at the Cashier. Is this standard?

Is it standard for the cashier to get upset or standard to have a 3K a day limit?

The 3K a day is on the Princess website so it is standard.

I just got back from our princess cruise, and you are correct, $3000 per day with no fees. I hit them for $8100 with no problems or attitude at cashout.
They did have conflicting info online, but it appears that is princess in general, as they had a lot of things online that were completely wrong. It appears each cruise line handles it differently, it would be helpful to have current data points for the major lines.

The most important thing to remember (besides not getting mugged after payout) is to keep your cash under $10,000 so you wont have the hassle of filling out customs forms when you disembark.

I wound up paying much more than 2.5% as I lost about $900 in the casino during the trip, but I had fun chasing the jackpots.

YMMV but do not pay attention to any of the above posts as a fact or even the cruise line web sites. The major cruise lines rules differ on each ship. Most cruise ship Casinos are run as an actual separate entity or tracked as another entity. Example: RCL listed on the NYSE has several cruise lines and each line has at least several ships. I have been on RCL cruises that do not charge and easily walked with 9,000 in cash. I have been on ships with a signs that say they charge a fee but have had it waived, So once again YMMV.

So you are saying I DID NOT get the cash back as I said I did. That was a FACT. I did get cash back without any fees. As I said above different cruise lines have different rules. I am giving the facts and they are true as they pertain to me and my cruises. You should not tell people to "not pay attention" to posts when I and others are trying to be helpful.

I agree the info posted by the cruise lines is inconsistent, sometimes vague, and mostly wrong.
On the other hand, personal experience posted above can be believed.
I believe centurian was saying don't believe the cruise lines web postings and even though the above posts are true for individual ships (as we can attest) they can not be relied on as being valid for all lines or even all ships in a particular line.

Ocean Players Club is the Carnival unit that runs the casinos on all 10 Carnival brands. This is from their FAQ page. (Not in any way meant to dispute the $3000/day thing on Princess, as that may be a recent change, or differs for some other reason).

Q. Can I use my onboard account card to get funds in the casino?

A. Yes, there is no charge at the slot machines for using your onboard account card to access funds. For any transactions completed at a table game, or the cashiers cage there is a service fee up to 3% each. You can withdraw up to $2,000 per day depending on the cruise line. Please ask the casino staff onboard for further details.

Just did it on Princess. $3k per day. I assume charging to Chase Sapphire Preferred will yield 6k points for travel spend, right?

Yes, it should, SkyTeam777. This may be one of the last reliable methods for innovative point procurement there is, and I don't talk about it very often on purpose. The cruise line may charge a fee, or they may not. I'd assume the worst. The highest I've seen is 3%. Depending on your needs, it can still be worth it. I do believe it might be possible to push too far with this, and I typically blow a few bucks on slots or something just for posterity's sake, but I've never had any trouble.
