FAQ
  1. What is EMV contactless?

EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.

In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.

  2. What is CDCVM?

CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.

    More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527

  3. Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?

Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)

  4. Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?

This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)

  5. I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.

Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.

Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).

Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.

  6. How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?

An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

It's ISO response code. Very common on Canadian receipts although not explicitly labelled (i.e. usually says 00 APPROVED)

Speaking of Taco Bell, they apparently have order kiosks now:

The CVM listed on the email receipt still says signature, though, despite not asking me for one--so I wouldn't count them as having unattended terminals for the purpose of testing stuff like Barclay's cards.

Alright! Too bad you can't put the RedCard in Apple Pay (yet). At least Target's in-app wallet combines the card and Cartwheel in one scan (with no need to enter the PIN).

Contactless acceptance is ubiquitous, and I suggest using Apple or Google Pay if that is an option for you. You have to bring your own pen these days for chip-and-signature transactions. Contactless avoids this.

Like in New Zealand, everyone calls contactless transactions "PayWave", which is the official Visa branding.
I’m definitely going to use Apple Pay while there. I was in Iceland for Christmas and it was so nice to be able to my Apple Watch to pay for everything. I’m looking forward to this also in Australia. I also noticed that using my Apple Watch for contactless allowed me pass the signature so yes it’s definitely a huge added benefit.

Target Seattle Pike Place has EMV contactless enabled. The UI looks the same but with four dots; it does not look like the picture from the press release. Perhaps it'll change over time? Overall, it looks like the rollout is doing well!

For others who use regular cards, does the remove card sound go back to the nice sounding one?

https://www.cspdailynews.com/company...souri-illinois Almost all of those Circle K are currently Shell branded so I wonder if they will be phasing out Circle K Shell eventually? "Additional sites in the region will be converted within the next several months." I see a lot of Circle K Shell in the STL area on the contactless locator so they may have upgraded the pos to unbranded already.

The MC map updated again but it's still missing a lot of places. I wonder if they're purposely not showing all of the locations anymore (for instance, maybe only the places with low contactless use so that people are more likely to go to those and use it)?

Just drove by my local Westfield IN (Indianapolis area) Circle K / Shell that I frequent on the way home from Costco. All of the Shell branding appears to have been removed. Didn't stop in as I didn't need gas but not a Shell logo was to be seen from the road. The banners over the pumps had only the Circle K branding and there was an empty spot on the sign by the road where the Shell logo used to be. This is a newly rebuilt store that reopened within the last year.

So it seems they might be getting rid of Circle K Shell altogether and I wonder if it has to do with the lack of EMV at those locations? While unbranded Circle K now has EMV enabled and so do Phillips 66/Conoco Circle K's as well. I guess if it starts happening in AZ then they must be getting rid of Shell for sure. Hmmm here it is happening in FL: https://www.tampabay.com/news/busine...ons-_167658781 interesting..

So, in Safeway's New England division, the EMV update was rolled out to all stores today instead of a staggered rollout. Contactless payments run as EMV don't even show a cash back prompt if everything is working properly. I haven't seen any external changes to any of the screens or processing time.

So Chase is updating its Marriott cards in mid-late February as part of the Bonvoy rebrand, with contactless shown in the image of the new card. I wonder if the remaining Chase cards will get it around this time?
