Are PayPal Here merchants miscoding transactions?

A week ago I went to a gelato/coffee shop and charged it onto my CSP. When it posted, I noticed that I didn't get the 2x dining points like I was supposed to. The merchant's name also started with "PP*" (this means PayPal, right?) Anyone else have issues with bonus points getting applied when paying at merchants that use PayPal's reader? I'm wondering if this is just an isolated case or if PayPal forces a single merchant category for everyone.

(BTW, I wish Chase had more details for each transaction on their online banking so I could at least see what category the merchant was.)

Based on the recent MPX* thread, the * prefix does not affect the underlying MCC.

Chase does provide MCC info (granted, in words, not numbers). You have to pretend to dispute the trx online to see this info.

My guess is that a coffee shop would be classed as something other than fast food/restaurants.

For your reference:
5814 Fast Food Restaurants
5812 Eating Places, Restaurants; 5813 Drinking Places
5411 Grocery Stores, Supermarkets; 5422 Freezer, Meat Lockers; 5441 Candy, Nut, Confection Stores; 5451 Dairy Product Stores; 5462 Bakeries; 5499 Misc Food Stores, Convenience Stores, Specialty Markets

Apparently it got classified as "MISC FOOD STORES-SPECIALITY,CONVENIENCE,MARKETS,VENDING MACHINES". (For comparison, Starbucks and another frozen yogurt store were classified as "FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS" and thus resulted in the 2x.) I'm not sure it's worth SMing Chase to try to get the 2x, especially since it was for a low amount.

IME, the classifications are based on what the merchant specifies - the bank issuing the credit card isn't doing this.

Also, IME, coffee shops classify themselves differently. Starbucks, IME does give me a bonus as if it's a restaurant, but other coffee places don't. For example, the upscale local coffee shop/cafe I go to doesn't classify itself as a restaurant, so no bonus there.

Most places that use Square code as Restaurant.

I've never had a PayPal Here merchant code correctly.
