My Lord I am annoyed! Discover stiffed me 4 months in a row on the 5% rewards. When I called they promised restitution on the next month's statement. First month it showed although they again stiffed me on the 5%.
This month the both stiffed me on the 5% category and the promised restitution. Talked to a supervisor. Got a face full of attitude. Cancelled.
I have had Discover since it was a Sears Roebuck card. No more.

So that was presumably your longest credit history, and instead of just putting it in a drawer you cancelled it???
I will never cancel my Discover card, as long as it remains free, no matter what they do. I can ignore is as much as I want, but given that it's the card with deaces (rather than just a few years) of credit history on my aco...., it seems prudent to just keep there for the rest of my life. (It's hard to be sure which of my other cards I've gotten recently I'll keep for decades.)

I rarely use Discover... but I have a large credit line, and its one of my oldest TL's.
Its in the drawer 99% of the time, but when there's no annual fee on the card, I dont see a reason to cancel.

Thanks for the response. I must admit you are correct. But I can afford my pique because Discover isn't my oldest card. Nor have I intention of seeking credit, a new job, or a security clearance in the future, so my 800+ CR is pretty much useless to me.
Discover lost its wallet space years ago. 1/4% on the first $3,000 is pretty pitiful. And spend in the revolving 5% category doesn't count towards the $3,000. So I only drug the card out for the 5%. Since they systematically stiffed me on the 5%, it was time to call it quits. Mayhap, enough lost market share will wake them up.

On the other hand, for travelers to China having a Discover is second only to having a local card, so they have a market that no other issue is bothering to reach for.

Discover has been good to me and one of my highest CL. Besides, i wont be canceling anytime soon, they have $500 of my cashback money sitting there.

a couple of years ago they cancelled my card for nonuse.
boy was i ticked and naive.
need to use these cards a couple times a year (probably) to keep them from closing your account due to inactivity.
it had great history from when i used it, and was only of my oldest credit lines.
now they send me invites to apply all the time.
if i were to re open, would it attach to my old credit line? (i am guessing probably not but worth asking).

i didn't even know anything about credit score, history churning, point s, miles etc till about 1.5 years ago , when i accidentally bumped on FT.
I did the same and many other mistakes before, like cancelling my oldest capital one credit card frustrated wit them because they wont increase my credit limit beyond $500. didn't realize when in Macy's and other stores they would ask , would you like a store card that will give you so much discount. sure, why not? and bingo- hard inquiry and they would say well sorry it was not approved. i thought it was some sort of lottery.
you will be surprised that most people are like me and know little or nothing. FT community is small and it is our responsibility to society that we help spread the word about educating in simple terms of the skills and cardinal rules to individuals to not mess up their credit history or credit score. not everyone may be lucky to have 800 plus score like you.
for instance if someone does a google search -'discover cancel card' and reads your post only, not the follow up to any , he or she may think discover is a crappy customer service company , hell with it . and may endanger with such action that may hurt his credit score etc.
sorry for the long ramble, i have learned a lot from FT, but its not easy , it takes hours of reading searching understanding and doing things ....so the experienced here should help.

FYI, for anyone else with a Discover More card (I assume that was your card), you can swap it out for a Discover IT card instantly by messaging Discover, no credit pull required. The newer IT card is basically identical to the More except that there's no $3000 cap (it's always 1% outside of the 5% categories, just like Freedom).

I believe it wasn't a feature of the IT card at launch, but it was definitely added a few months later.
