Discover lost its wallet space years ago. 1/4% on the first $3,000 is pretty pitiful. And spend in the revolving 5% category doesn't count towards the $3,000. So I only drug the card out for the 5%. Since they systematically stiffed me on the 5%, it was time to call it quits. Mayhap, enough lost market share will wake them up.
i understand that the 800+ credit score is useless for you now and without directing anything personal to your strategy, i want to bring a few point s to the fore.
i didn't even know anything about credit score, history churning, point s, miles etc till about 1.5 years ago , when i accidentally bumped on FT.
I did the same and many other mistakes before, like cancelling my oldest capital one credit card frustrated wit them because they wont increase my credit limit beyond $500. didn't realize when in Macy's and other stores they would ask , would you like a store card that will give you so much discount. sure, why not? and bingo- hard inquiry and they would say well sorry it was not approved. i thought it was some sort of lottery.
you will be surprised that most people are like me and know little or nothing. FT community is small and it is our responsibility to society that we help spread the word about educating in simple terms of the skills and cardinal rules to individuals to not mess up their credit history or credit score. not everyone may be lucky to have 800 plus score like you.

for instance if someone does a google search -'discover cancel card' and reads your post only, not the follow up to any , he or she may think discover is a crappy customer service company , hell with it . and may endanger with such action that may hurt his credit score etc.

sorry for the long ramble, i have learned a lot from FT, but its not easy , it takes hours of reading searching understanding and doing things ....so the experienced here should help.
