Let's crowd source things that have counted towards travel redemptions that are not so obvious

Successful
  • NS Hispeed Train Tickets (nshispeed.com)
  • Capitaine Train Tickets (capitaine.com)
  • Eurostar Train Tickets (eurostar.com)
  • DB Bahn Trains Germany (bahn.de)
  • Super Shuttle (mixed, worked in SF when (billed SUPERSHUTTLE EXECUCARS), worked in Boston (SUPERSHUTTLE BOSTON), failed in LA (SUPERSHUTTLE)
  • rail europe on travelocity
  • New York City MTA Subway Cards
  • Boston MBTA Charlie Card reload & Commuter Rail passes & tickets
  • San Francisco Clipper Card public transit (autoload from website)
  • Norwegian Cruise Line purchase made from telephone order from vacationstogo.com
  • rail JR Rail in Japan, load as tourist attraction, call in to get it credit (Post#938)
  • Alaska Airlines checked baggage fee $25 charge
  • Southwest Early Bird Check-in (billed separately from airfare charges)
  • cheaptickets.com hotel
  • Amtrak train ticket >$25 (ALB-NYP)
  • Amtrak train ticket >$25 (unknown destinations)
  • Buying Lifemiles from Avianca
  • Primetime Shuttle (Worked from LAX-SNA)
  • Orbitz.com purchase
  • Priceline
  • Las Vegas Show Booked through hotel
  • Hotels.com
  • WMATA (Washington DC Metro) Weekly pass

Successful - Plus Only
  • Uber
  • NYC Taxi
  • Empire State Building tickets
  • SF Taxi (coded as "YELLOW CARD SERVICES I")

Unsuccessful (please mention the amount redeemed - important as anything under $25 cannot be reimbursed)

  • Amtrak (possibly due <$25 charge)
  • IHG points and cash hotel redemption
  • www.b-europe.com (SNCB rail)
  • Description: ZERVE *CA WHALES Merchant Category: THEATRICAL PRODUCERS (EXCEPT MOTION PICTURES), TICKET AGENCIES...Tickets to whale watching tour purchased over the phone.
  • Car2go
  • Hostelbookers.com deposit (maybe the charge which is >$25 will count?)
  • Thello train (France-Italy night train, codes as rail-freight)
  • Trenitalia (both online and in stations, posts as rail-freight)
  • Brazil airline GOL booked online codes as DIRECT MARKETING/DIRECT MARKETERS--NOT ELESWH ..
  • Blue Water Rafting. Merchant category "Recreation Services -- Not elsewhere classified"
  • Parking at IAH (Houston Intercontinental - on airport) -$76 (PARKING LOTS AND GARAGES)
  • Parking at SNA (John Wayne Airport)
  • Skyjump at Stratosphere Hotel LV $150 (01/14) - not charged by hotel.
  • Gotobus.com Long Distance Buses, ~$100
  • Global Entry

Don't forget travel purchase needs to be > $25 charge for 2,500 mile redemption
Partial redemptions are possible - however you cannot redeem against that charge again. So if you have a $500 charge and you spend 40K points against it, you cannot redeem 10K points for the remaining $100 of that charge.

I just returned from a 10 day trip to Paris and Amsterdam and I used my Barclay Arrival card almost exclusively. So far, only one purchase has been eligible for redemption (a 1 hour canal cruise in Amsterdam by cruise company Rederij P. Rooij - bought three tickets together for $41 dollars/30 Euros):

DESCRIPTION: Rederij P.Kooij Bv
MERCHANT LOCATION:* AMSTERDAM NLD
MERCHANT CATEGORY: STEAMSHIP AND CRUISE LINES

So far, nothing else has been eligible for redemption, however, I realize now I forgot that subway tickets in Paris should be redeemable, but I never bought them in amounts of at least $25 at a time.

How did you get from Paris to Amsterdam?

Disneyland Tokyo tickets bought at Sheraton Tokyo bay has been reimbursed

I took the Thayls train from Paris to Amsterdam which I booked on Thalys.com a few months ago. I used the Barclay Arrival card but it did not code as passenger rail and was not redeemable for points. (I posted about that on this thread a few months ago.)

Huh, weird... I've had Eurostar, Capitaine, DB Bahn, and NS Hispeed all be redeemable and I booked a Thalys train with Capitaine since there were no booking fees and they had the lowest price from Paris-Luxembourg.

I've updated the Wiki with my findings.

My 40k after $1k bonus just posted so I guess my March offer worked.

Also, it looks like purchases at taptogo.net work for a redemption. I'm logged in to my account right now and it's showing my recent monthly tap card purchase as redeemable. (However, I didn't select it because my firm pays for my pass anyway.)

Tried to redeem 505000 accumulated points for a travel charge to a cruise lines placed on my Barclay arrival card. It shows as a redeemable charge.

Logged on online to my account, clicked on redeem, the drop down choices show the maximum points I can redeem as 200,000 pts. It also says "can only redeem for each travel charge one time" which I knew. The terms and conditions for this card say “There is no maximum to the total miles you can redeem”.

Anyone heard or experienced the same ?
Called Barclay CSR , escalated it up to two supervisor levels all say...sorry but the system only allows that amount to be redeemed.
What am I missing something?
Did you ever get a resolution to this?

I am looking at a similar redemption in a couple weeks and I'm hoping all is well!

The booking from Thalys.com showed up like this on my Barclay statement (booked in February):

DESCRIPTION: NMBS/SNCB INTERNET RA
MERCHANT LOCATION:* BRUXELLES/BRU BEL
MERCHANT CATEGORY: RAILROADS-FREIGHT

I did not know about Capitaine, and I thought about booking through NS Hispeed, but I thought it would work out fine through Thalys. Oh well!

Ahh, the dreaded rail freight designation. You can try calling Barclays and telling them these are train tickets for you and they are not rail freight, you don't even live in Europe.

Anybody know if travel insurance is included in redemptions?

I just booked a couple of elderly ladies, who have a sister with a grave illness, flying out this Thursday to go visit her.

I was so concerned about changes, I included cancellation insurance.

Used my Barclays for booking. The insurance was an option on the UA website.

if you or they cancel your Barclay arrival and you have some miles saved in your account, they are gone too? Same like Chase UR points?

Sure it's been answered in the previous 79 pages, but I just got the Arrivals World card on the 23rd or April. I have online access to see my account and credit score (which is awesome...even thought they use the old TU98 score instead of the new one), and the card has already registered to all three credit bureaus, but I have yet to receive the card itself. I've already asked BarclayCardUS about this, but wanted to hear from you guys if this was normal, or did I just request the card and right/wrong time?

Cheers, all!

Hotel stay not coded as travel

I had a recent stay at a very well known resort chain that wasn't coded as travel but purchases I made in their gift shop were, for example.
We encountered similar issue with a Puerto Rico hotel resort earlier this year. We called several times and spoke to all types of managers to no avail.

Their system is coded by humans and somehow they forget that hotel-code should be a "travel" expense-code.

On a happier note, they do give lots of points, i.e. boost and 4x amex GCs.

I got my letter that my AF is coming due. For those churning this card for the signup bonus, how long are you waiting between closure and reapplication?
