Odd data points from pda.continental.com

[This thread is for odd or interesting data points we've found via the pda site and discussion thereof.]

Can customers be on both the flight standby list and the upgrade standby list? I thought one had to be confirmed on a flight before one could be on its upgrade list. I just noticed this for my flight this evening:
Flight Standby List:
1. KUZ, K.
2. LYN, T.
3. JAC, C.
4. JAC, S.

5. BUD, C.
6. BUD, M.
Upgrade Standby List*:
1. SPI, C.
2. STA, G.
3. SPI, P.
4. LIE, E.
5. EDE, D.
6. LEE, J.
7. BOG, T.
8. WAN, Z.
9. MER, J.
10. KUZ, K.
11. LYN, T.
12. JAC, C.
13. JAC, S.
I find that rather odd...

These are usually non-revs.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this has happened to me in the past when I've been upgraded on the original flight through EUA and then went on standby for a different flight. It hasn't happened consistently but I believe I've seen this appear on the PDA site in those circumstances.

Makes sense...

I'm not sure why you bolded the JACs, but not K KUZ and T LYN right ahead of them on both lists.

I would read this as positions 1-9 on the upgrade list for the flight being occupied by people who already have confirmed seats on the flight - and then the remainder of the list (which matches the standby list) being people who are standing by and, if they get on the flight, and if there are seats up front, would qualify for an upgrade (elites or whatever).

Seems completely logical.

It was really late and I didn't notice that!

Does it matter? at position #10, there's no way they'd clear

While true for this list, I have often seen the #1 position on the list occupied by someone who was standby on the flight. The last time I saw this I was sitting next to the gate agent so I know how it happened.

Someone, confirmed in first on a later flight, came up to the gate agent and asked to take the earlier flight. The agent told the passenger that the flight was actually overbooked and even if he cleared the standby list he may not receive a first class seat (it was booked full at the time -- though one not checked in). He accepted. I reloaded the lists on my Blackberry and the person wound up #1 on both the flight standby list and the flight upgrade list. Sucks to be the person who had been #1 all day and was confirmed on that flight because they weren't on the flight standby list.

So the point is...some people who wind up on the flight standby list are still ordered based on priority (elite level, etc.) on the flight upgrade list. This might be based on being checked-in for a different flight that day or not; I'm not 100% sure.

That's not true. CO208 last night was booked to capacity (zeroed out in every fare class, possibly even oversold) and ended up taking more than a dozen standby pax.

Maybe since those 4 were the first to be upgraded, they were then last on the upgrade list so they could be "Super Secret Double Upgraded" once all the other upgrades had been processed.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

CO Insider posted about people being on both lists in the long thread from when the PDA site came out. They are almost certainly non-revs, as non-revs can waitlist for any open seat and therefore be on both lists at the same time. Revenue pax do have to clear into Y first and then they can go on the upgrade list. I've had flights where battlefield upgrades were cleared first and then standbys and I've seen it go the other way, where the upgrades make room for Y pax.

Sorry but that is not true. Look at my post further up in this thread. I heard it happen with my own ears and then saw the standby lists (upgrade & flight) on my PDA *at the gate*. Someone walked right up, asked to be put on the flight (earlier than the one they were booked on) and went straight to #1 on both the flight standby list and flight upgrade list. Flight was oversold so they couldn't confirm the pax in any seat until one person didn't show up in FC. Three others cleared the flight standby list in coach.

So, it is not only non-revs who show up on both lists. As I've reported, many times on the flights I'm on the same person appears on both lists and they aren't at the bottom of the upgrade list (which is where non-revs should appear).

Isn't that how it should work? I'm a PLAT on full paid Y fare, I arrive at airport early and ask to stand by for an earlier flight... shouldn't I be at the top of both lists?

I've also experienced a similar situation where the person was a displaced paid F customer.

Depends. If you are confirmed on the new flight then you should be at the top of the list for F, behind only paid F fares who are displaced. If you are not confirmed yet into the new flight you should be only on the top of the standby list, and then only after all non-voluntary standbys. Displaced passengers are prioritized above folks who just want to go home early/later than they are ticketed.

I didn't consider a displaced F passenger in my earlier post; they would likely have the option to standby for either cabin. A Y passenger cannot standby for the F cabin.

Hi Everyone, there are two scenarios where someone could appear on both the Flight Standby list and the Upgrade Standby list. The first scenario is a paid First Class customer, who'll appear on the Flight Standby list (in priority order) and at or near the top of the Upgrade Standby list. The second scenario is a pass rider (a.k.a. non-rev) who'll appear at or near the bottom of both lists. In both cases, the traveler will be cleared into the main cabin if/when this is the only seat available and will remain on the Upgrade Standby list.
