From a pure business perspective, I dont think it really matters to an airline or any business. 75K of EQM represents on average some dollar amount of revenue. If I can sell that amount of revenue and offer "status" in return but have virtually no costs (ok, there are some costs) -- wow, now that is a GREAT business -- sign me up.
The slippery slope is that once you "sell" elite status outright, it then becomes a commodity, not a recognition/reward for customer "loyalty". |

I agree -my original EQM is 6.6c/eqm, and purchase option is $2010/30K = 6.7c/eqm.
So it is basically twice you pay, twice mile you get - it's not great deal except in case you don't have time to do MR. I can still think of a few, VERY limited scenarios where this deal makes sense, but not for the vast majority of folks the vast majority of the time. P.T. Barnum was right... |

This is a BIG problem. I need EQMs in 2011, not now. Does anyone know if EQMs post right away and to the currnt year or the year the flight will take place in? BIG ISSUE. |

I think this math only works because you're got an itinerary that was at their price point to begin with. Doing a bit more research here this afternoon it appears that pretty much every option results in the 3cpRDM and 4.5cpEQM base price, plus or minus a bit.

Of course as others mentioned earlier, if you can buy a refundable ticket, buy the EQMs, then cancel the flight, refund the ticket, and still keep the paid-for EQMs, it's the deal-of-the-century.

MR#1: Originally 3.2c/eqm, purchasing EQM offered price is 7.5c/eqm, so final cost goes up to 5.9c/eqm(triple). MR#2: Originally 3.1c/eqm, purchasing EQM costs 7.5c/eqm and final costs is 5.8c/eqm(triple). (assuming Elite minimum 500 RDM/EQM will be counted in double/triple miles) So If I take these offers, very good MRs become just regular MRs. But, as Vulcan said, if this can push me to 100K EQM, I may consider... 4 SWUs are attractive. ETA: fixed EQM offering based on wrong assumption. |

If it "didn't matter" to the airlines, they'd all be selling platinum elite status the same way they sell lounge memberships. $X gets you silver, $Y gets you gold, etc.

Based on the analysis I did above with my TPA-HKG trips, I will definitely pull the trigger after 1/1/2011. Unless someone really points out a deal killer.
Has anyone confirmed that the EQMs post immediatly and not after the trip posts? |

Even when I check it, the EQM option does not appear.

I bought the RDMs for an upcoming EWR-PBI-EWR trip. For $123 it offered 4,096 RDMs. There was no offer for EQMs. The miles posted to my account within a few moments. Well, they are listed under Most Recent Account Activity but do not yet show up in my Mileage Balance on the left side of the screen.

Bump.
Waiting to see if anyone who participates can report if the EQMs post immediately or after the flight. |

I have a EWR-HKG trip coming up next week and its tempting to take the 30k EQM offer to ensure I hit 100k for the year. Wish you could just buy the EQM and not the RDM though.
