For the first high school prom I went to, I got my date a yellow rose boutonniere (black dress = no worries about matching) because it was my favorite color. I didn't realize the added benefit till the end of the night when all the guys were looking for their identical tux jackets which they had ditched hours before...very easy to pick out in a sea of white roses and carnations. :D That idea followed me to all future proms and formal occasions throughout HS and college...
