You said it! As I am learning -- you need to look at one's overall retirement 'picture' to calculate whether an individual is a candidate to take advantage of a ROTH conversion. First off -- one needs to have the funds to pay the taxes for the conversion! While it's a plus to be able to do a conversion this year & spread the tax liability over 2011/2012 -- there's a good chance that the rates will be higher in those years!

I'm definitely thinking that it'll be a real pain to have to allocate a substantial part of one's retirement budget for the taxes that will be due w/each withdrawal from a taxable source -- so am looking to find ways to minimize those future taxes that will certainly be at a higher rate! (How else will the deficit be paid down?!) In that respect -- it's no different from working and paying taxes along the way, except that you're needing to take it from other sources!

In a sense, the ROTH conversion is a tax exclusive gift -- not a bad result. Another IRA option is to watch the legislation and see if it can be used to fill charitable bequests (e.g. distribution to family foundation).

Taxes will increase, although the way it is presented will leave much to the imagination.

I could have quoted many others, but that guy has called some seriously bad karma onto his head. What a .

That'll work. Philly's sewer system can't be any nicer than the above-ground city.

Hey, wait a minute! Philly's not bad! And the Vet is gone!

Off to sleep so I can wake up in six hours. The whole point of coming up here tonight rather than tomorrow morning was to sleep. So much for that.

Don't need to be a DB about it - I could only see myself being asked to run to attempt to stop specific initiatives.

Other than missing the exit off of Rte 18 -- twice -- and having to use the automated check-in machines because the one person behind the desk was on the phone, it's OK. The front desk also had difficulty making change for a $20 bill. On the other hand, I think I get a FFN out of this stay, the fitness center is OK, and the room is fine.

Charging $13 a night for parking is pretty annoying, though (not that I'm paying for it).

They gave me a free parking tag as my stay last month was my first at the hotel.

Most LA area Hyatts charge more than that. Very occasionally they will comp parking...

This cuts into the mattress run value here... :(

I will need to learn more about the 'charitable bequest' option -- had no idea that this was under consideration as an IRA option.

One of the benefits of a ROTH is that your beneficiaries won't owe any taxes on their RMDs from said inherited ROTH IRA.^

I agree that the 'tax exclusive' feature of a ROTH conversion is appealing -- but again -- needs to have the funds to pay the tax -- one can always hope that they have 'liquid' assets for this purpose! Also, one has to make sure that the conversion won't bump you into a much higher tax bracket -- that would be somewhat counter-intuitive!

Never mind. I can't count either.
