I'm looking at the new train schedule that goes in effect in a week and I see NJ Transit has added a couple of extra minutes to each trip. Why are they bothering getting new equipment that does 125 mph when they creep along at 70 now so they don't get ahead of schedule?

CM, are you a RC employee? If so, I'd love to hear your take on their employee training/orientation programs.

NJT trains hit 70mph? Is this new?

Sorry for fiancee's loss!

The issue this year is that we don't know what the ultimate rules will be. Members of C:rolleyes:ngress have indicated that they will install new rules retroactively, which may be unconstitutional. Final rules may not be in place for a number of years for those who want the choice of the current regime or that which is "legislated" in the future.

Yes, right now there is no estate tax, but the unlimited step up in basis that came with death up until December 31 is not there any more. If one has significant holdings (above $1.3 million total basis) in appreciated property, this might end up being worse than the estate tax, particularly if the death is the first of a married couple (in a community property state).

It depends on where you live. Around me the old stuff is limited to 80 so they don't fall apart because of the bad rebuild years ago. Others can and will do 100 mph when they get behind schedule.

Thank you all for the kind comments...

I just recently got hit by the wall of tiredness - I think I'm going to go to bed, because I can. Actually, I probably could have an hour ago, but that clearly didn't happen. :p Time to cut losses. Night, Box.

Interesting, I had no idea. I don't ride NJT much at all but the few times I have, it never felt like we were moving even close to 70+.

Hadn't thought about the loss of the 'step-up in basis' -- I hear ya on that -- that is major for a lot of folks! I really can't imagine Congress doing a retroactive tax -- as they had plenty of opportunity to 'fix' this -- as they knew it was coming! What were they thinking -- that the world wasn't gonna make it to 2010?!

So, I figure that one has to proactively plan for potential estate taxes -- not knowing what the 'threshold' may ultimately be! In my case -- no longer being married -- & with my kids being primary bennies -- I have to make sure that all my docs are in order. Fortunately my brother has agreed to serve as my executor & trustee!^ His best friend is an atty & municipal judge!^^:-: I keep telling my son that he might want to consider law school in the future -- at least for the knowledge gained!

That is completely nuts and really un-American. He lost it, you found it, and made sure that it got back to him. That is a very great service which is clearly deserving of a showing of appreciation. And how do Americans customarily show appreciation? Do I need to answer that one?

mwg25 - I had a situation that was similar a few years back and sorry to hear about your pain. I am sure everything will turn out ok and will send good wishes to your family. It's not easy! Best wishes with everything.

I agree completely.

I went to the restaurant around the corner to pick up dinner tonight. The person in front of me (who dined in with his family) paid a $76.70 check and left no tip.
