Calling for Box entries...
If I win the *A trip from Randy and it is not in a post that I've quoted someone else I need to find a worthy recipient. I'll pick (randomly) from the group here that is interested. Who wants in? Post or PM is acceptable. I know that Brit is offline now but she's in the pool. sfogate is, too, as I know she actually wants to go. Who else? |

(I'm mostly kidding - I know that teachers are generally quite seriously underpaid and I feel VERY fortunate to have the job that I do that allows me to get away with a bit of a travel budget, which I also realize will probably evaporate the minute I become non-single...) |

Presuming that this isn't a tragedy, I'll be very curious to see exactly what the effect is on DEN-area airspace. According to flightaware, UA 876 is still 100% on track with 340 miles to go, but I'm assuming they'll be OK since the balloon is down now...? Not sure about earlier flights though. |

Wow, I guess I should read those FAA regs a little closer. A buddy and I are in the process of building an unmanned ultra high altitude near-space balloon that is helium powered. It will take a GPS device, cell phone, and/or ham radio for telemetry purposes, as well as a camera for photo and video evidence. Most balloons of the type we're looking at (about 8 feet in diameter) reach 80,000 to 90,000 feet. We'll be using a pie tin as an FAA radar reflector but there are some comments in FAA regs about contacting local ATC airspace controllers to let them know what's going on.

IAH-ers + fozz, I assume we're still up for getting together tonight? I'll be offline for a few hours starting around 4:30 PM while I drive back to Houston. I know we need a place — here are a few suggestions, feel free to suggest others if you're still interested. I believe fozz said he was landing around 7:30 and J.Edward is supposed to provide his ride. I'll be back in H-town no later than 7:00 and can also provide transportation if anyone needs it.
A few suggestions:
Who's in? |
sbm12, I also would like to be in the pool should you win. Thanks.

They used a beer cooler as an insulated container for the equipment the balloon carried. :D |
