Aside from a few notoriously Plat-unfriendly hotels (Sheraton NYC Hotel/Towers comes to mind), it's a rare day when that happens at any SPG property. Besides, if you target primarily Leisure/Resort properties, it's virtually unheard of (unless the property is just flat sold-out for a wedding, or something).

If room upgrades are what you crave, then SPG Plat is the best dealer on the block. :D

That one might be tough. Lots of people actually pay for suites around New Year's. I have had some great New Year's upgrades, though (Le Meridien Munich did me right, with a 1,500 sq. ft. suite with a rack-rate of about 1,500EUR/night).
