how woudl it be the TV if the TV is not between the cable box and the HT unit?

It is still cutting out and there are no audio connections running between the HT unit and the box. The only audio I have plugged in is HDMI from the box to the TV.

Can you borrow a neighbor's cable box for a moment? Do cable boxes still work that way?

Nope. Comcast boxes are coded by phone number.

That gives me audio from the surround speakers only when the DVD is on, and it still cuts out but it cuts out at a higher tolerance.

I think the problem is with the HT components, probably the sub-woofer.

Figures it won't work with the box. Pirate protection circuit w/ HDMI doing that. Unplug that audio cable all together and play a DVD. Does the sound still cut out?

Just rebooted the surround unit again and it's still cutting out. The sound gets too loud and it just cuts the sound but lets the video keep running.

You can't keep the sound volume down  Sounds like it's something wrong w/ the HT unit then if the sound is not controlable.

I don't get why, but I pulled the HDMI from the TV and the box and played a DVD. It still cut out.

I had a similar problem with my HT when I first got it. IIRC, my problem was that some wires were touching and it so when the volume went up the speaker cut out. I would double check all speaker wire connections to make sure they're set correctly. Otherwise, I think it's a bum unit.

The purpose of a home theater unit is to play movies objectionably loud. :D

And no, I worded it poorly. The sound doesn't have a mind of its own. The sound proactively kills itself because of something that the unit thinks is too loud. Example: Top Gun is the only thing in the DVD carousel. The opening music, credits, etc. play great...but as soon as that first camera shot of the Tomcat afterburner comes up, the sound dies. It does not transition between low and high volume sounds in the mix...it just dies. It can't handle the jet noise or hard hits in the audio track.

I highly recommend Hotel Des Indes, in Den Haag (about 40 mins from AMS by Train). It is, IMO, one of SPG's best properties... period.

*sigh* I need to start staying where you stay. of course, I'd get the closet next to the ice maker.

That doesn't seem to be the issue here. Problem still happens when cable box is not in the equation. HT system is component and not HDMI.

Disagree. Mine doesn't cut and return. It outright dies. I have to reboot the surround sound headunit to get audio back.

Some of the copper speaker wires are frayed at the ends...and all indications are that it's not a bum unit, both as per the service tech who does local warranty repairs and the previous owner. Previous owner is one of my mother's vendors - he had it working perfectly fine with HDMI running from his cable box.

Could be a bad speaker. Unplug all but one speaker and play a DVD. Start adding one speaker at at time until it cuts out. If it happens with the first speaker, switch to another one. I that cuts out again then you know it's the unit. Connect the subwoofer last.
