So if I am switching to the AmEx anyway, should I just wait until I do that since the AmEx comes with SPG Gold?

The SPG AMEX comes with Preferred Plus status, not Gold. The biggest difference is Preferred Plus gets the standard 2 points/$ while Gold gets you 3 points/$. Spending $30k on the SPG AMEX will get you Gold.

Thanks for that. Anything beats Hilton Silver. At least there are a few SPG's near me that I could build up nights at if I choose to go that route.

I believe some AAA memberships also secure Preferred Plus.

I've been talking about it for a couple weeks - application period closed yesterday so I had to write a nice cover letter.

:o  Don't know how I missed it - noticed it a couple days ago in context of the SO and utility bill discussion and thus it seemed like it came together quickly. Hope it works out - fingers crossed!

I got in for a weekend and a day turn. Are you doing any?

On the benefits, IIRC, you also get a one room category upgrade (which depending on the property can be :-::D:-: ... in others its simply an SPG floor).

Thanks. One more to go after this one, and the mission is to be free of credit card debt and have the honeymoon paid off before the wedding.

Now, THAT, I do remember - when electric came in and then in the context of this discussion over the weekend. Still  how that huge jump could happen ... unless there was major laundry and cleaning action goin' on ;)

Tis a noble effort, this. I don't know yet if it is truly possible, especially given that there is some other wedding stuff that I'm paying for solely OOP. Debt-free was always the mission, but I'm not sure if the honeymoon will be totally included. This whole thing of caring about my financial health is somewhat new to me.
