Could be worse. The Middle East and West Asia are having a record heatwave right now. Baghdad was 125 degrees yesterday (an all-time high for Iraq). A few days ago, MohenjuDaro, Pakistan was 128 degrees (all-time high for Asia).

Wow.

Somehow, I don't think that I would have guessed that out of all the Asian continent, Pakistan would hold the temperature record!

+1 - except, for "travel" substitute "travel by air/not sweat every month over making sure all bills are paid/sleep through the night/be able to ever take a minute or a dollar for myself without feeling guilty"...

I'm also deathly worried about turning into those people who talk about nothing except the minutiae of their children's life and development. If I ever find myself trading toilet-training stories...

Does anyone have any experience with ROA (the city - alas no airport for me, this time - we have to drive from DC)? Specifically, I'm looking for a good sports-bar type place to watch the USA-Ghana game on Saturday afternoon. It should get done just in time to head over to the 5 pm wedding for which I'll be in town - hopefully there won't be extra time...

Also, for the NYCers past and present:

I have a friend who's moving to the city in July to take an i-banking job (near the southeast corner of Central Park). He's interested in living in SoHo, the West Village, Greenwich Village, Gramercy or Tribeca. (Worked in NYC at Goldman for a summer but otherwise has spent no time in the city.)

Any pros and cons to any of those neighborhoods, and/or any good apartment-hunting tips? I've never lived in Manhattan, so I'm not much help.

It's a chain but there's a Smokey Bones there. There are also a couple of Buffalo Wild Wings if I remember correctly.

When I was downtown there we'd go to a place called Blue 5 Restaurant. The food was so-so but they have TVs.

At night we'd go to Tavern on the Market and they also had televisions.

Well, the commute could be as much as 30 mins to those neighborhoods depending on time of day, and given the hours that bankers work that could be a real pain. Then again, he will probably rarely be traveling during rush hour.

What about the near parts of the Upper East Side?

Most banking employers will provide a stipend for a broker fee, that will be the easiest for him. He probably wont have time to search for a place on his own if he is working banking hours. If not tell him to look at www.nybits.com for no fee rentals.

I've lived in three of the below neighborhoods and all have pros and cons. I used to be anti-broker, but with the rental market now they are worth it. I paid less than one month's fee and ended up in a place where I'll stay for at least 3 years.

SoHo: Close to N/R for commute. Great for shopping and restaurants.
West Village: Great neighborhood all-around, but a zoo on the weekends.
Greenwich Village: N Y U. Could be good if your friend is younger, but otherwise somewhat annoying.
Gramercy: Quiet neighborhood with lots of park space. Close to the 6, which would be good for the commute.
Tribeca: Still overpriced and somewhat isolated. Great restaurants.

BBM me if you have any questions.

You bet! I'm all about sharing the work. I am a member of the PTLAs, part time lazy a$$es. (This is the name the full timers started to call the part timers last year when we insisted on taking a bathroom break sometime during our 4 hours of working.)

Perhaps you'll want to join me at NERAX North this year? Here's the list of U.S. casks and the list of U.K. casks from last year.
