But it's looking like you've got a pretty good chance of treating your wife very well on an affordable Italian getaway this year.

Indeed. It just makes me nervous that the money went in at 1.45 and now is at 1.20...

On the other hand, I have some found money that is just waiting to buy Italian shoes.

That idea never quite came to fruition!

The dollar was briefly more valuable than the Euro just after its introduction.

True, but for (appropriately) purely fiat reasons. It is a great experiment, to have monetary base separate from individual states' fiscal bases, almost as much as forming a Union of tribes, some of whom really do not much like or trust some of the others.

All in all, pretty successful all around. That is, until a deep recession raised the problem of reconciling the monetary experiment in Portugal, and Italy, and Greece, and Spain, and Hungary, and...

I am hardly an economist, but it never made a lot of sense to me why the PIGS would want to follow a monetary policy geared towards Germany (which more or less dominates Eurozone monetary policy).

I don't. Too many nights spent pounding 1.5L of champagne and 500ml of vodka then going out.

There there was the night when I drank 3L of something called "Gin Molotov."

Thanks for the condolences -- I'll pass them along to Team Canada.

I'm sure they're analyzing this as we speak. As a society they'd go nuts controlling the PIGS. Hyper-efficient and thorough with... southern Europe. Bad combo.

Besides, hasn't Germany already annexed Majorca?

What's Germany's biggest export? Germans!

I really don't think it's going to happen tonight. There are too many in the air, or in other hemispheres, for the dynamic to sustain. Tomorrow, however, is the day for sure.
