50,000 mile offer after spending $250 for the Visa Signature card. Annual fee waived for first year. This offer is accessible by telephone only.

* Frugal Travel Guy reports that this offer will end April 30, 2010. If you try to apply after that date, please tell me about your experience. Thanks
* This Flyertalk discussion tells you how to apply and discusses the successful and occasional failed attempts at applying for the card.
* This United Airlines website page describes the offer. Around April 9 this sentence was added, perhaps in response to the large interested generated by flyertalkers: "Please note: This is offer is available to select members who are original recipients of a specific direct mail or email invitation." Everyone on the extensive flyertalk discussion says that the offer was fully described by the reps on the phone, and no limitation on who could apply were mentioned in the extensive Terms and Conditions read to them. I think this one is worth a shot. But do it now, before they can change their computer systems to accept only those targeted.
o Useful posts on the flyertalk discussion:
+ Call Mileage Plus Customer Service (1-800-421-4655 for non-elites)
1. Choose "manage my account"
2. Let them know your mileage plus number and zip code.
3. Say "more options"
4. Finally say "apply for a United mileage plus card".
5. The Flyertalk discussion indicates on Post #468 that the offer code is BFV.
+ As of the morning of April 10, 2010, following the above instructions gets a recorded message saying that the offer is no longer available. However, flyertalkers have reported success that same morning by talking to a human being. Here are some of the comments posted April 10:

its still alive.

My dad called the 800 chase app number and even though they claim that there is only 30k miles, he told them the url of the united website, and they relented and did him the 50k miles. They know about it but one have to push deeper...

I called United, went to MileagePlus, Chose Manage Account, got connected to a CSR and they told me yes, it is still alive and then put me through to the dept that takes apps. This was today, Saturday, 10 April, 2010.

I got the hang up from the automatic system last night too. I followed instruction on post #184 and got a live rep to take my application. (made sure to put in the wrong zip code! otherwise you'll only get the hang up). good luck.

yes it seems as though having the wrong MP number or zip code will prompt the system to get an agent on the phone to reconfirm with you.

MP Chase Visa this morning at 11:20 am CST. Called MP, simply asked for agent and asked for credit card offers. She transferred me to Credit Card 'department'. They confirmed 50k mile offer good on first purchase. Even tho I'd had a MP card 3 years previously. Still good!

Way to hard to find anything on that site. The 90s called. They want their design back.

The UA forum. Call 800.421.4655. Say "Manage My Account." Enter the correct MP number and the wrong ZIP 2x. Tell the rep who answers that you want to apply for the Visa. They'll transfer you to someone and process it. Confirm the 50K bonus and have fun.

My app took 19:43 start to finish and I was approved.

Anyone around tomorrow for happy hour/dinner/drinks in NYC?

Finally home for a few days. In looking at the mail and other debris from my trips, I can tell I have only been here 8 hours since last Thursday evening.

! I'm one trip away from 100K (paid) LFM's on CO. Ever so slowly getting there.

In this credit climate, you got the two more important items.

! So true. I'm not going to go for the 50K offer since it requires spend. I'm more focused on getting rid of the debt load, and I'm doing very well at said effort. Last week's tips = 6.5% of the balance on the card that I'm not paying minimums on.

I went down to two CC cards (and don't carry a balance) but that's not enough to participate in all the bonus offers for dining etc. I've never got a 50K offer plus the first annual fee waived.

! Can't you just drop a couple of expenses on there that you'd have anyway....cable bill, cell phone.

:o Im perched up in the EWR PClub waiting on the flight to DUB. I dont think Ive ever seen this place so dead. Bartenders are counting their tips and from what I can tell it looks like the 3 of them will be splitting around $450. I wonder how long of a shift they work?

! Certainly could, but I'm attempting to move to a more cash-driven lifestyle. I have the cheaper CO debit card at 1 mile per $2, and I just linked it to my primary checking account so I can move money easier. I'm going to start paying cash for gas instead of using an AmEx charge card. The only thing stopping me from ending my relationship with AmEx is that my charge card is the longest-tenured line of credit that I have. I'm reluctant to take that score hit, at this point anyway.

+1, just be smart about it and credit cards can be your friend ;) Ive certainly milked a number of them then got a home loan and just started again.

! Tip counting should never be publicly visible. All that does is inspire people not to tip since they see the large wad of cash already generated.

! I'm just the opposite. Everything possible goes on the credit card and it gets paid off each month.

There might be 20 people in the entire main EWR club next to security. We were the only ones at the bar until the computer died now there is one guy up there. Its also hot as hell in here.

Credit is fine, just remember not to add to the AmEx if it has a balance. Using debit at gas stations is tricky at the pump (large holds) but I believe you can get a precise authorization figure if you pay inside first. Just understand the reason vendors accept credit cards is it increases the amount of the average purchase - with that knowledge everyday, make your own sound consumer choices.
