Confirmed and Denied. There are two pieces to that story.

The F-15's from Otis, MA were true Alert fighters and IIRC had live missiles onboard and a full drum of 20mm for the cannon, which in the fighter version of the Eagle gets you about 910 rounds. The F-16's from Atlantic City (my outfit) were on a training mission at the time and had a full cannon drum (507-512 rounds) but only trainer missiles and 25-lb. practice bombs. The -16 pilots stuck around knowing that if another suspect aircraft came into play that they could at the very least gun it down...the 20mm slugs were just target practice solid lead rounds. Thr fun stuff (HE, HEI, API, APIT) only flies in combat.

To say that there were no weapons onboard is alarmist journalism as usual. As Ammo guys, we were the first to touch the jets in the morning even before the maintainers. We were given the time that the fuel trucks were to arrive, and we had to be clear of the aircraft two hours before that.
