Corporations figured out long ago that purchasing the government was cheaper than being responsive to it. Given that this is now an entrenched norm, I'm not particularly hopeful that we'll have a government that is responsive to the people anytime soon. I think things will likely get much worse before they get better.

IMHO, the generic (and pathological) corporate mindset that places short-term profit above all other considerations, and which at the macro-level is trans-national (owing no loyalty to any government, despite enjoying the protections and benefits of national laws), will lead to further .

There will be a continuing race to offshore production to where inputs (both labor and material) are cheapest, and to fight against any and all meaningful regulation and/or taxation. Under a global free-market economy, the lowest common denominator of taxation, wages, and regulation will dominate (providing a short-term competitive advantage to those countries with the least of each). Externalities will continue to be given short-shrift.

The looting works marvelously, until it results in an eroded middle-class that can no longer support the economic system it initially created. No worries, though. By that time, the big corporations have moved their focus to the giant new markets of China and India, where there's an entirely new (and massive) middle-class on the rise, which will support the system. Just don't expect the socio/economic/political system here to look remotely functional, by that point.

It's remotely functional now? You are more of an optimist than I, my friend.

No. It's terrible now. I just think it's going to get quite a lot worse. Cuba under Batista is at the optimistic end of my thinking.

I was wondering why news helicopters are hovering near my house - now. Train vs. bus at Main & St. Joseph Pkwy.

ETA: Woke my daughter up from her nap.

The 747-8 looks to be headed south now ... could they be preparing to land?

I was training someone on the ambulance a few weeks ago and they asked why we had binoculars on the busses. I reminded them that we have train tracks that run through our service areas and about once a quarter some ding-dong decides to play chicken with the choo-choo and loses.

It's a lot easier to scan the scene through binoculars rather than traipsing through whatever looking for a rogue .
