My plans have changed, and Saturday the 18th is the least desirable of the choices.

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Jul 31, 2007 8:15 pm

Looks like Friday Aug. 17 or Saturday Aug. 25 are the two dates which would net the most participants. Would everyone care to vote for one of the two choices?

I vote for the 25th, as I think it most likely I would be able to attend on that day.

ssullivan Jul 31, 2007 8:18 pm

My vote is changing... the 25th is probably better for me now.

I updated Post 1. Also, please weigh in regarding thoughts on a venue change to the Black Labrador Pub in Montrose. CO 1E, J.Edward and I scoped it out a few weeks back. It's a relatively authentic "English" pub (by American standards) located in a nice area of Montrose. There's shaded outdoor seating if the weather is nice (not lately), with an oversized outdoor chess-board painted on the sidewalk with 2ft pieces.

The food there is pub food dressed up to edible standards (actually quite tasty), and the selection of beer is adequate, though by no means as extensive as at the Saucer. Like the Saucer, they have wi-fi. Unlike the saucer, the Black Lab is decidedly quieter, to the point you can hear yourself think, even if there are large crowds there.

Though the wait-staff are not hard on the eyes, the mini-skirts and tube-tops sported by the well-proportioned staff at the Saucer are not in evidence at the Black Lab :p

Oh yeah, thread title change might be in order...Esteemed moderator? :)

What about dinner at Niko Niko's and THEN Black Lab? ^ (I miss Houston sometimes... )

Please tell us more about Niko Niko. By the sound of it, I would guess a sushi place? Where is it located, and what are the prices like? The idea of dinner followed by drinks is definitely appealing.

MilesDavis Aug 1, 2007 7:32 am

Niko Niko's is a Greek/Mediterranean place on Studemont near Westheimer.

Saturday the 25th for me.

Excellent. I love Greek food. Lebanese is great as well.

Works for me. I'm just getting back into town that afternoon, and would probably skip dinner at Niko Nikos (^, btw) and meet at the pub.

Hartmann Aug 1, 2007 10:36 am

The 25th still works on my calendar though after a meeting this morning there is a chance I will be hopping from DEN-YYC-DEN-and back somewhere in late August and early September.

Wow, never been to Niko Niko's and you love Greek food? You've been missing out! And it is less than a mile up Montrose from The Black Lab.

MilesDavis Aug 1, 2007 12:26 pm

You're right - it is still Montrose at that point. Sorry! :D

Yeah it doesn't become Studemont until Allen Parkway. And then Studewood once you get to White Oak in the Heights.

ssullivan Aug 1, 2007 12:32 pm

Well my out of town guest is now definitely coming the weekend of August 17, so I definitely vote for the weekend of August 25 instead.

HedgeFundFlyer Aug 1, 2007 12:55 pm

Since I'm relatively new to Houston and never attended a DO I wonder how I'll recognize the FTers. My guesses:

1) They are the ones flashing their PC cards trying to get free drinks
2) The yellow FT balloons
3) They are sitting in a 3-row 2-2 setting, all facing forward
4) The BOSE headsets
5) Someone is arguing that it's not worth being Plat
6) Everyone is scheming to get upgraded to a barstool from a table
7) Someone is paging COInsider

Feel free to enlighten me otherwise.;)

MilesDavis Aug 1, 2007 1:16 pm

They might also be congregating around a blue carpet! :D

Or trying to steal it...

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Aug 1, 2007 2:38 pm

Ooh...I also just remembered that on Saturdays, the St. Arnold's Brewery offers "tours" at its brewery (located near the intersection of Hwy 290 & Antoine, not far from 290 & 610 loop). The "tour" isn't much, but $5 gets you four wooden nickels, each good for a pint of St. Arnold's (very good micro-brew, many varieties available). $5 for 4 pints is a very good deal. If you already have a St. Arnold's glass (I have a liter one, but you can buy them at the brewery), they'll usually fill it to the brim for you for a wooden nickel, even though you're only technically supposed to get a pint.

IIRC, the "tour" happens around noon or 1pm on Saturdays. If there's any interest, and if we hold this on a Saturday, perhaps there could be a mini-event prior to the Micro-DO dinner/drinks.

CO 1E Aug 1, 2007 3:47 pm

The 25th is now the only day I would be available to attend the Micro-Do.

MilesDavis Aug 1, 2007 4:25 pm

While the St. Arnold's Brewery tour is a great idea for excellent brew at a bargain price, I am not sure it is the ideal environment for "chatting it up" with FT'ers. At least, the last time I went, it was a complete and utter mad house.

...and FT isn't?

:p :D

Well it looks like the 25th is the date that's people are settling on -- I'm flying back from BWI that day but should be able to make it to wherever folks are at by 8ish.

Looking forward to it :)

You guys will all be way too drunk by the time I get there.:p
I'll have to drink up at the DEN PC beforehand to catch up.:D

hellz yeah! I'm all in for the st arnolds....sadly it isn't quite as awesome as a speech by the founders followed by free beer, but I'll live...
I almost posted a retraction of available dates to change my schedule, but I misread something my friend had sent me by a whole week. So, count me in on everything. I'll try to bring a roommate/friend/etc to share our wealth of information with.

Ditto, and I have about the same impressions of these guys....
Then again, considering how many of my friends think I'm crazy to fly like I do, maybe I'll actually join them on a few of those things. Just too bad I'm not even silver yet (but very close).

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Aug 2, 2007 8:37 am

Grrr...as of late last night, the Significant Otter has commanded my presence in MLU on said date, to be with the future inlaws... I shall think fondly of you all as I schlep up to Monroe on Watchuwant Airlines :p

I would strongly advise you to take control of the domestic situation NOW, before it's too late !

Hmmm, I think I'll definitely have to file that one under "easier said than done." :D

IAH_FLYER Aug 2, 2007 9:05 am

It's been years since I've been to the St Arnold's brewery...but I seem to remember it being in a warehouse-type facility without air conditioning. Is this still the case? This is August in Houston after all...

No change. I hadn't even noticed it was summer this year, considering the almost daily torrential downpours, and highs topping out at about 88-90 degrees throughout July.

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Aug 6, 2007 9:04 am

I have updated the first post to reflect those who have expressed interest in attending on August 25th. Also, as I cannot attend, and as J.Edward will not be able to arrive until later in the evening, we are seeking a volunteer to serve as a coordinator for the Micro-DO. It's not an especially onerous task, and would only involve making reservations at Niko Niko's and The Black Labrador Pub, keeping all attendees apprised of the schedule via PM, and providing those attending with a contact number in case of directional difficulties or other unforeseen events.

Any volunteers willing to clutter up their PM inbox and take one for the team?

CO 1E Aug 6, 2007 9:05 am

Alas, I no longer will be able to attend the next Micro Do, but I look forward to seeing everyone at the main DO in September.

I am about 95% sure I will be able to make it... nothing on the schedule as of right now. Looking forward to seeing y'all again. (do we need to " 'splain things " to the Significant Otter about what's REALLY important??? :D)

She also had the audacity to allow her birthday to fall during Cigarman's Mega DO in September :(

Still no volunteers to be the coordinator (aka punching bag) for this Micro-DO?

MilesDavis Aug 10, 2007 7:04 pm

Bump.

I can do it for folks :)

theblakefish Aug 10, 2007 7:54 pm

Put me down as tenative -- although I am getting ready to move about 4 blocks from said beverage serving establishment, I may have to go to BOS for the weekend. However, I am much more apt to attend now that we are not being forced to watch the Lastros.

Hartmann Aug 10, 2007 8:43 pm

I can do it if you'd like. I plan on being there for the early portion of the evening as well as the latter portion.

Hartmann Aug 15, 2007 6:15 pm

Right now we have 9 people as coming.

What are everyone's preferences as far as time goes? 6:30pm for dinner at Niko's and then 8:00 or 8:30pm for the Black Lab Pub?

I am going to make reservations at Niko's ASAP and I'll see what the Black Lab can do for us (I think they'll take reservations).

rkkwan Aug 15, 2007 6:34 pm

That time is good. I'm still up for both dinner and drinks. ^

ssullivan Aug 15, 2007 6:55 pm

Those times sound good to me. I'll be there for both dinner and drinks!
