Sounds like a plan -- Monday through Thursday on the week of the 5th work for me.

I'm good for Tuesday-Thursday of that week, and Jeffie said he was good for Tuesday-Friday. So far, looks like three of us are available May 6-8.

JC1120 Apr 21, 2008 3:14 pm

the 7th doesn't work for me. But the rest of that week looks fine so far.

My vote is for the Flying Saucer if its downtown just because I can walk from the office without driving.

Otherwise my preference is somewhere off the I-10 between downtown and Memorial City Mall.

Four people (Myself, J.Edward, Jeffie & CJ1120) available for May 6, or May 8.

Little Woodrow's, Brewery Tap & Front Porch Pub are either walking distance or 2-4 Light Rail Stops + Short Walk from just about anywhere Downtown. I, too, enjoy the Saucer. However, the main problem there is excessive noise due to poor acoustics. Tuesday nights (May 6) are Pub Trivia at the Saucer, which involves constant announcements over the PA System (excruciatingly loud).

Yep then in that case strike out the Saucer.

Front Porch Pub for the ladies or Brewery Tap for the distance then are my two votes.

What about Hartmann?

I don't know that Hartmann has yet weighed in regarding his May 6/8 availability. He is also working to put together a short-notice drinks session for this week, for any and all who may be able to attend.

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Apr 21, 2008 3:59 pm

I could definitely spring for Brewery Tap, even though its interior is a bit dark. The long wooden tables are good for groups, and we would likely have it largely to ourselves on a Tuesday or Thursday evening after work. IIRC, just around the corner there's an excellent wine bar, housed in the oldest building in downtown Houston. We could turn the DO into a Crawl, perhaps.

MilesDavis Apr 21, 2008 4:32 pm

Well, when you put it that way! ^

Unfortunately, I will be in NY getting ready for my upcoming trip to Saint Barthelemy.....shucks.

rkkwan Apr 21, 2008 4:59 pm

I am in. I hope ssullivan can make it too.

ssullivan Apr 21, 2008 5:10 pm

Damn, the week of May 5 I'm in Lubbock. Some of us actually have to travel for our jobs. :) BUT I am flying WN back on Thursday May 8, arriving around 9:00 PM (I could make that 8:00-8:30 PM if I change to the earlier flight). So I could do it that night, but would have to arrive late.

Other than that, May is looking pretty full, although the early part of the week of May 26 I'm available. I officially move out of Houston on Wednesday, May 28... might be fun to get wasted with the local FT gang one last time on the evening of Monday, May 26 or Tuesday, May 27!

Well, almost all who have expressed interest have had availability for Thursday, May 8. So, perhaps you could make your way from HOU and meet the stragglers still managing to sway slightly upright.

I would be up for Tuesday, May 27 as an additional ssullivan Moving-Away DO (:()...as May 26 is a travel day for me (last leg of my IAH-FRA-OSL-SVO-HKG-HKT-BKK-FRA-IAH itinerary).

HookTheBrotherUp Apr 21, 2008 7:07 pm

Greetings from Perth, Australia! I think I might show up to this event. No, I'm not an Aussie, just vacationing here and catching up on FT.

I used to hang out at the Brewery Tap when some of you were about ~10 years old, or so! Thursday nights, and almost free beer, at Party on the Plaza, then a march down to the BT. A buddy and I befriended the guy who used to go from booth to booth switching out the taps on the kegs, we'd give him five or ten bucks, and he'd 'Hook the brother up' with beer the rest of the night!

Regards

COFlyerCLE Apr 21, 2008 7:17 pm

Figures... I'm flying through IAH on the 6th (PVR-IAH-CLE). Sounds like I'm off by two days!

Of course, if we end up partaking in too much Cinco de Mayo.... we may not make it to Houston until the 8th ;)

IAHtraveler Apr 21, 2008 7:21 pm

Ugh, looks like I'll miss it again if it's the week of the 5th. I'm in Brazil from 5/2-5/13. Hopefully one of these times I'll actually be in town (well, The Woodlands) and make my way down for an event!

sdm1130 Apr 21, 2008 7:49 pm

:( You guys need to start planning some of these gatherings on the weekends!

They almost always used to be on weekends, which depressed turnout from locals (because many locals do all they can to flee this hellhole on weekends :D).

As the baseball season progresses, I could definitely envision another weekend Beer & Ballpark DO. IIRC, someone recently suggested a "Hub War" DO when the Yankees come to town (dunno if that's a weekend series or not).

That was actually me. I looked into tickets real quick and it seems to be standing room only for the entire weekend. They might have some better options set aside for groups, but I have not had a chance to call about that. Maybe CO can hook us up with a corporate box for the event?

ConciergeMike Apr 21, 2008 8:08 pm

Would any of the IAHers be interested in a trip up to Citizens Bank for the Phils? Any party that has an Otter involved I'm sure is a good time, even though I've been to precisely none of them.

Hartmann Apr 21, 2008 8:31 pm

Sorry for my late response...

I am available for that week, as long as it's during the week.

As far as making my way up to Philly, I'm all for that.

ConciergeMike Apr 21, 2008 8:56 pm

As if some of my posting hasn't proven that I'm a goofball, I should have considered checking the MLB schedule...PHL-HOU was last week, only time in PHL this year.

If we can commit to May 8, I'll go ahead and change my ticket back from LBB. I can make the 5:30 PM flight out of there via AUS, and arrive at HOU at 7:45 PM.

Sounds like a good plan to me! May 27 is better for me as well, as May 26 I'm flying back from MSY and I've got to get home and get ready for the movers to pick up my stuff the next day. May 27 I'll be staying in a hotel in Houston before heading out for the first day of the drive to Atlanta.

I'll be doing the same drive to Atlanta a couple of days after you.

crnk Apr 22, 2008 9:01 am

I'm in for either of those dates, but if we're doing the 8th, I think my brother gets in that afternoon, so it would be really great if we could go to a place that allows minors to sit and eat.

Also, THIS FRIDAY, April 22, I'm hosting an art show (primarily photos) at the building where I live.
3511 Houston Ave (at North Main) (45 North of downtown, first exit North of 10 (or SB should be the 2nd exit before?))
6-late, lots of beer, and hopefully a good turnout.

Anyway, feel free to come, feel free to spread the word--everyone's invited.

Okay. I have updated Post 1 to show the May 8 Date, tentative location of the Brewery Tap (will have to find out whether minors are allowed in the establishment for crnk's brother), and list of attendees and those who have expressed interest. Will request a Thread Title Change

colpuck Apr 22, 2008 10:07 am

Love to do it, but can't. I am in the middle of MCO-FNT, ATL-IAD, ATL-SJO. There is only so much I can do.

We have to do the FCTSTY DO.

Sorry the dates don't work for you, but SJO certainly sounds nice. No worries...this definitely won't be the last time we get together and drink.

The hostel I am staying at has a roof top bar, and wait for it..............................................a mechanical bull. Yes a good time will be had, and they are picking me up from the airport.

it's safe to assume....though jetblue is easier for me as i prefer JFK to EWR (newark) when i leave straight from the office.

Tons of stuff to do downtown I used to live in Houston House apartments... I know DT Houston like the back of my hand.

What's this wine place (is that new?).

Nope - Brewery Tap at Milam & Franklin (a block or so from the Cotton Exchange Bar). The Wine Bar/Bar around the corner has been there for a few years IIRC. Will post the name next time I walk past it.

Perhaps. Hard to say. I never noticed the name before, as I've always been a wee bit tipsy each time I ended up there :D

Thanks. I'd love to bring him along, and I bet he'd be into it, since he's starting to catch the travel bug...
Also, to note---as long as they're not carding at the door, it shouldn't be a problem...he's just a few months shy and looks/acts pretty mature. And, based on previous experiences, he isn't the type to try to drink at a bar underage (he refused offers for drinks from a family friend a few months back).

I've had some issues/changes with my class schedules, and it is really putting a crunch on this weekend's time. And, since I really need to be concentrating on my grades, I've decided to postpone for a week. That said, New date: Friday May 2
