Pilot perspective:
We don't know what the FA told the pilot, but let's suppose she told the pilot that a passenger was intoxicated and confrontational. The pilot has no choice at this point but to eject the passenger. I suppose he could tell his co-worker (the flight attendant) that he does not trust her judgement despite the fact that is it her responsiblity to gauge whether passengers are intoxicated. He could then set a process in motion that would delay the entire flight and lead to one or the other of them to be reprimanded for bad judgement. If it were me, I'd trust my co-worker and contact the gate agent to begin the ejection process and get back to my pre-departure checks (you know, the part of my job where I am responsible for making sure the plane is safe to fly, etc.)
FA perspective:
Drunk passenger confronts you during the boarding process. He does not threaten other passengers, but now that he has confronted you in front of witnesses, you are obligated to eject him.
From the companies perspective, it might be good to have a redcoat explain the situation to you. Did this happen?

I dont know the law in New Jersey. In California, if a bar serves alcohol to underage minor, the bar can lose their alcohol license. Ryan illegally drank alcohol at president club is not only a problem of his own. We could lose our right to enjoy alcohol at President Club because of his illegal behavior.

C'mon folks, let this thread die the death it so richly deserves. Who KNOWS what happened? None of us were there, including Ryan (hic), I would submit.
And then Pilot Roger Ramjet and Sally Stewardess show up in this thread, citing FAA Regulations and "airline" (they don't even fly for CO) Rules as if they were Moses delivering the Ten Commandments. "Upon visible signs of intoxication, the FAA Regulations empower the flight crew to blah blah blah..." Well, DUH! Yet the airlines liquor us up in the PC and in FC. Not just allowing us to BUY drinks, but GIVING us UNLIMITED FREE drinks. Hence, if these "FAA Regulations" were actually consistently enforced by Roger Ramjet and Sally Stewardess there would be no one left on the plane for them to fly!
What really is going on here is that Roger Ramjet and Sally Stewardess just pull out and dust of the 'ol standby Visible Intoxication "FAA Regulation" when it suits their needs. No, friends, this is not really a Visible Intoxication "FAA Regulation", it is a Piss Off The Flight Crew and You're Tossed "FAA Regulation". Roger Ramjet and Sally Stewardess have DISCRETION to enforce or not enforce rules. They are EMPOWERED. Now so more than ever. And some of them really, really like this. So just sit in your seat with your seatback raised to its full, uncomfortable position; ensure that your seatbelt is securely fastened around your waist; and DON'T PISS OFF THE FLIGHT CREW. It's not that hard. Really. Most of them are very nice, on Continental anyway.
For the record, Ryan appears to be the slight bit of a dumbass, and I would have tossed him, too.

quite right
if the captain pushed it you would have been
locked up for at least discon and trespass
which means you would have been in the jail at newark airport for at least 4hrs maybe more
consider yourself lucky that they just asked you to remove yourself
