One segment ELTC upgrade?
Can an ELTC upgrade be reserved if only one of the segments(of a 2 segment flight) has first class seats available?
Or would I have to use a space available upgrade when checking in for the flight?

I have used an ELTC for a one segment upgrade on a R/T flight and then gotten a space available on the return. I believe that the intention of the ELTC is on a per segment basis.

I guess I wasnt clear in my original post.
My return flight is SAN-CLE-EWR as part of a roundtrip. The CLE-EWR doesnt have any first class seats open, but the SAN-CLE does.
Can I still use an ELTC even though only part of the flight can be confirmed?

Boomer, Never thought of your post that way.
However, you probably can use the ELTC, however you might just be in luck by checking in at SAN and not have to use the certificate. Is there just no FC seats for ELTC upgrades? Or, no FC seats at all? CO holds some back and when you check-in in SAN, you can get upgraded the whole trip. Of course, you probably already know that. I think I would confirm the ELTC for the long flight and then see what happens when you check-in.

Remember, those certificates will be worthless very soon. Continental is completely going away from that format.
See the 1999 elite program on the Continental Page.
Hope this helps,

Well, I called the elite line today and
was able to confirm an upgrade for the SAN-CLE segment.
Since thats 2100 miles and the CLE-EWR one
is only 400, I'm happy.
BTW: First Class on the CLE-EWR is completely sold-out, I'll standby for first class on the CLE-EWR segment.

EWR for C-O is one of its busiest hubs, if NOT the busiest. I have seen many an angry travelers at other airports (New Orleans, Houston, Vegas) saying they can't understand as Gold One Pass elite that First is sold out to "Newark, New Jersey" "NEWARK, NEW JERSEY!"
Good luck on getting your upgrade Boomer. I've found chances increase if you take the red eyes to EWR. And even then its a 50-50 odds. CATMAN

CLE (major hub) to EWR (major hub) is really tough to get upgrades. There are probably 8 gazillion Golds/Platinums that fly between these two hubs everyday.

One point of contention...
Although CLE-EWR may be a very busy route with a lot of Elites flying it, SAN-EWR via CLE may not necessarily be so. If you were to check in at SAN and be added to the waitlist for first for the CLE-EWR flight, your chances of getting the upgrade are significantly increased than if you were to ask at the gate once you've already arrived in CLE.
By getting on the waitlist in SAN, you beat all of the elites that might be checking in for that flight in Cleveland.
