I think Sheryl makes a very valid point and agree completly. Seating can be very important for many reasons to different people.

Thanks for the input. There are some great suggestions here.
I do agree that if I do get upgraded and she gets mad that is pretty silly on her part...remember its just a seat..
I like the idea of switching seats with her during flight of course if it is ok with the FA.
I am not sure why she would get mad, maybe jealous..not sure..I asked her and cant get a very good answer besides it would be inconsiderate.
Thanks again.

One other thing I meant to add: if you're going to upgrade, make sure when you get your seating assignments together in coach to give the elite pax the middle seat and the non-elite the window/aisle. At least that way if you get a battlefield upgrade (which as a silver will be the most likely scenario), you won't be leaving someone behind by themselves in a middle seat.

If I'm in my bulkhead aisle, it'd be a hard sell to get me out of there. But an aisle for an aisle, in a row further up, no problem. Further back? forget it.

Me? Well, IF I'm lucky enough to be U/G, I'd probably consider changing seats, but I'm kinda partial to windows ......
And changing from bulkhead going north, why of course - going south, why of course not, unless it was an exit seat AND there was something more to it. At least three quarters of my leisure travel is international, and I like to get to the Immigration line as soon as possible
And if you GF makes that big of an issue of this, I see other problems looming

It doesn't sound like you travel enough to acheive Gold, but at that level you can request a companion upgrade as well.

As someone alluded to earlier, you have very limited options for upgrades if you are Silver on CO, particlularly traveling to/from/connecting to hub cities as Houston, Newark, etc. so you may not have that many opportunities to get into a fight with your GF over the upgrades anyway.
Secondly, I suppose I understand where your GF is coming from. My ASSUMPTION is that she believes that by opting to upgrade yourself rather than her, it indicates that you are less concerned about her comfort (well-being) and more concerned with yours--which would translate to your being selfish in her eyes.
What the heck, be a gentleman and give her the darn seat. Who knows, she may reward you.

After he was seated, he was approached by someone who wanted to switch seats with him so that person could sit with his friends. My friend refused because he didn't like the seat he would have had to move to. That person then had the nerve to ask the FA to ask my friend to switch with him without telling the FA that he had already asked and been turned down.
My friend was none too pleased and let it be known to the FA. The FA was very embarrassed when she learned the full story and said she never would have asked if she had known.
So the next time someone refuses to switch seats, consider that they may have paid thousands of dollars for a BF seat rather than a few hundred dollars that you may have paid for a Y seat.
Yes, there are a lot of people who arctually do PAY to sit in BF.

it should make you feel good to move to a different FC/BF seat just in order to allow someone to sit near their friends while traveling on a 8 hour flight.
