Assuming they can be used into norther South America, Central America or the Caribbean - which is quite possible - they'd be worth a bit more.
"These upgrades are eligible on all paid fares flown in the mainland U.S., Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean and Central America, and select flights in Hawaii and Asia/Oceania." Which is IIRC how UA CR1s worked all along (maybe with the exception of Asia/Oceania). I've used my UA CR1s mostly to upgrade travel companions who'd otherwise not get an upgrade, on the occasional transcon (don't fly many) and on trips to/from Hawaii where I wanted to guarantee the upgrade and not risk to upgrade lottery. The advantage of (UA) CR1s over mileage upgrades (especially on the UA Hawaii routes) is that there is no copay. |

CR1s, from my POV, will be our "get out of jail" card... So, will CO start releasing R space weeks in advance for those who are on the waitlist with CR1s? If CR1s are going to be behind Y/B/M and mileage upgrades then it is worthless IMO.
I.E. Release R space along with ZE space in advance, then at around 7 days out zero out R space to preserve ZE and F space for elites in Y/B/M and paid F customers. |

And those SWUs have to be used by 12/31/11.
100K EQM in 2010 - earns 4 SWUs valid on any fare. Need restricted R class availability, valid from time the 4 SWUs post until 12/31/11. 100K EQM in 2011 - earns 6 SWUs on higher fare codes only. R class availability is still a requirement. These need to be used by 12/31/12. ETA: SWUs issued in 2010 expire 2/29/2012; SWUs issued in 2011 -- expire 12 months after issuance! |

I can't remember the last time I saw "R" space - even months out on a transcon. Even b-ups are tough, and even months out.

Actually the 2011-issued SWUs will be valid for 1 year from date issued.

Very well said...

This is really a mixed bag. Let me paraphrase (loosely) what I read between the lines:
1) We will give you 2 more SWUs, but we know most of you will likely never be able to make use of them. (devaluation for CO and UA ffs) 2) We will give you access to CR1s, but it's more difficult to earn them than it used to be on UA (devaluation for UA, enhancement for CO ffs) 3) Presidential Platinum will effectively be deep-sixed in 2011 and if you're currently a PPlat and keep up spending a bunch of money with us, you may or may not get an invite to be GS sometime in late 2011. (No change for UA ffs and slight devaluation for CO PPlats) 4) 1ks will have update priority over lower earning members....does that include mileage upgrades? Or is this the real deal like it currently works on CO/UA. If so, then this is the one thing that I see as a HUGE improvement. (No change for UA ffs and HUGE improvement for most CO ffs) 5) Crickets on E+ does not make for a good omen. In all, I am suprised and disappointed by the lack of specificity of the new program. WHy not come out and give it to us straight: - Name of the merged Program - Official Elite tiers of the merged program - Upgrade rules of merged program - Mileage earning rules of new program I see a lot of wiggle room in what has been announced. Too much for my personal comfort. |

But the EWR transcons are key routes - R is likely never available. For example, on DCA-IAH routes I see see R available several months out - and if those two seats go, then R is held back until a day or two before for key times.

What bucket do B ups come out of? It seems like every time I fly the DCA/IAH route I end up in a B up seat. Havent flown it in coach in a few years. Though the price is quite expensive...

Concerning the MM spousal match -
My MM 8 year platinum wife will be 8000 miles short this year. I can't wait until next year for you to decide if this benefit will still be in effect. I'll have to buy EQM's to insure her platinum status for 2011. It sure would be nice to know before the end of the year. |
