E+/MM clues
I had some good conversations with both the UA and CO brass at the StarMegaDo in Houston and these were my perceptions:
*E+ is a contentious issue. UA wants to keep it, CO is taking a hard look at it. When we mentioned how important E+ was to the head of MP he told us to please make it known to the CO people in the room. Also when UA won best elite program at the FT Awards, the crowd broke out into heavy applause at the mention of E+ to make it known how popular it was. *No info on MM until next year. They are definitely merging them, but probably won't give details until later in '11. We were basically told this flat out. |

Thanks everyone for your questions, and I'll do my best to answer those that haven't already been covered. Here goes...

Scott: I know the programs would remain separate, but what would be the priority for upgrades for a CO elite flying UA metal and viceversa?
Any news on when CO Plat 100k would be at the same level of 1K on UA metal?

One question, if you are Gold this year and did not requalify for 2011 Elite Status does the change Effective Jan 1st mean status is not valid after Jan 31st instead of the "Valid Through 2/11" as printed on the card?
or does this apply to next year's status year?

In all, I am suprised and disappointed by the lack of specificity of the new program. WHy not come out and give it to us straight:
- Name of the merged Program - Official Elite tiers of the merged program - Upgrade rules of merged program - Mileage earning rules of new program

Yes, I too am disappointed at the loss of the credit for the card fee. I'd like to see the regulation that prevents a fee refund or credit. He wasn't refrring to the card apart from the no fee coments.

The only thing that makes no sense at all are the fare classes excluded from the new SWUs. Unless the fares are going to be reorganized (again) the K and G fares should not be listed there. I would expect that STNL would be excluded and W or higher will be valid. CO E fares are equivalent to W fare but with connections so it makes sense to include those as well. But excluding K & G is a very strange move IMO. I hope that's just a typo.

As a weekly road warrior who qualifies on segments, increasing the segment count for top elite level to 120 EQS is a big blow.

Any info on StarNet Blocking?
Can RU's be used to Hawaii on the BF flights? |

Hi reinballe, our plan is to keep a Million Miler program, however, the qualification and benefits are yet to be determined.
Hi GeoMedic, while it's not my place to cite or debate specific banking regulations, I can safely say that there were indeed changes made to regulations that made it difficult to offer the fee-waived credit card as part of our invitation-only Elite program. As a Million Miler, I want to say that it helps my home life a lot that my wife can be at the same level as me (though she flies only about 8 times a year, mostly using my miles). It gives her partial consolation for my continued absences and thus, makes my life easier. I hope this spousal benefit continues. |

- 8 regional upgrades (two at 75k, 100k, 125k, and 150k), and - 8 SWUs |

Thanks so much for responding. I hope I wasn't coming across as doubting you. I've always been the one to pull out the rules and read simply to understand.

If the new UA keeps E+, this is exactly what's going to happen on CO planes. Particularly, on the 73's, I predict a smaller F section while adding E+. That's the only way to make it profitable for the old CO aircraft.
This goes in line with my belief that post merger if you don't fly 100k each year your liklihood of receiving a complimentary upgrade will be so low it won't even be worth considering it a benefit. |

It's very disappointing to me that continuing a feature like E+ that, I for one have paid for out of my own pocket dozens of times, wouldn't be a slam-dunk as one of the key elements to be enthusiastically retained in the combined UaCo.
It is not obvious what they should do with CO's 737s. I would prefer they left them as is, if adding E+ means removing a row of F-seats (because this would greatly lower my odds of an upgrade). Naturally, the best outcome is that they leave the number of F-seats intact and add E+. But that might be hoping for too much.

My gut feeling is E+ goes away and is replaced fleetwide by ELR...that would be the classic CO solution.

Will E+ seats on COs planes be good news... For domestic flights... I think the answer will depend on "where" these are installed.
If the addition of E+ seats reduces the number of seats in F... it will mean fewer upgrades. That would be bad news IMO. Is it realistic that E+ seats would be added without removing F seats? I have my doubts when I look at the ratio of Y seats to F seats on CO planes and compare them to those of similar sized UA planes. COs ratio of Y seats to F seats on the 737-7, 737-8 and 737-9 ranges between: 6.6 - 9.33. UAs ratio of Y seats to F seats on (similar sized) A320 ranges between 10.5 - 11. This makes me wonder what we should wish for. Perhaps the the relevant question might be... Which of the two alternatives do you prefer? A) 2 segments in E+ and 1 in First B) 1 segment in ELR and 2 in First On planes configured for international routes... there is not doubt in my mind that E+ is great. (Because there are no complementary upgrades to BF)... So I hope to see E+ on all International flights... For domestic flights... My top priority will be to keep then number of F seats intact on COs planes. Note: The ratio on UA bigger planes is much better... According to seatguru.com (which I used to compute all these ratios) the domestic 767 tops with an impressive 6.17 ratio. The worst Y/F ratio are for COs 737-5 and UAs A319: 13.25 and 14 respectively. (Avoid this equipment if you are hoping for an upgrade). |
