Precisely. HKG-SYD will be in Y+ but SYD-AKL will be in Y.

That's why I was confused, as you said "QF Y+ all the way"

I'll be booking a Y+ award, but flying QF all the way. Auto-implications is that any sector without Y+ will be booked into Y instead. (Same kind of thing for F awards which book into J where F is not available).

If you're happy to pay that kind of premium for whY and whY+... I'd personally be inclined to book as 2 separate trips and pay a reduced amount of points.

I think it's a moot cause:
  • Y+ award all the way HKG-SYD-AKL: 5,925 mi = Zone 7 QF Classic Award = 63k points.
  • Y+ award HKG-SYD: 4,581 mi = Zone 5 QF Classic Award = 45k points. Y award SYD-AKL: 1,345 mi = Zone 3 QF Classic Award = 18k points. Total = 63k points.

Other options are
  • HKG-AKL direct on CX in Y (CX have no Y+) for 42k points; if I could preferentially get a seat on 10 Dec (QF premium already have said no J seats - forgot to check Y availability).
  • HKG-SYD on Y+ award then LA800 J cash flight. (Yes, I've found out for some odd reason that LA800 runs everyday now). Not bad for SCs if I book as a return. Only small tiff might be the connection time between QF128 and LA800 (the former arrives 0810h; the latter departs 0955h).

Sorry, I should stop steering this thread for my own planning.

But I guess you can upgrade me to Gold now, please...

I remember reading on the QF board that people have experienced booking Y+ flights to/from New Zealand and flying Y+ on the flights to/from Australia then being seated in J for the TT leg.

Well...moot point really. QF will let me have a Y+ HKG-SYD but there are absolutely no award flights left on SYD-AKL on 11 Dec except for QF113.

To be a bit more fair, QF113 - assuming it is not delayed - arrives in AKL 1950h. The last AKL-NPE flight is NZ8439 dep 2110h arr 2210h. I'm budgeting one hour to get from NPE to Waimarama (reasonable?), so arrival just after 2300h.

Will people be sound asleep by then?

Other option for SYD-AKL is to book points+pay through Amex TravelKey; going rates on QF43 are something like AUD 250.00 inc +++.

Also the Smart Saver fare AKL/NPE is NZD 110 (at least at the times of the day I want to travel). Should I hold out for the GAS fares? I guess I'm asking this more from the NZ and/or *A stalwarts here just in case I might be waiting for GAS fares that will never be offered at all (e.g. due to "blackout" dates).

Apart from that, my flight plans are loosely starting to fall together.....

Can't you tell that I'm not either? Though, paragliding is fun. But really, you just kinda have to sit there. And jump off a hill (actually, it's more run off it... but meh)

They do release GAS fares to NPE. I'd doubt they'd ever get the dates right for this though, but you never know.

I'm sure someone will be awake, otherwise you can go sleep on the beach.

And at that time of night, probably more like 30-40 mins from NPE -> Waimarama.

You had better add me to the interested silver list.

I have a few flights in mind, and a few airpoints dollars that need using.

BNE-SYD-AKL-NPE:
NPE-AKL-SYD-BNE

AKL-NPE-AKL on Air NZ.
