Might get a lot more members up to ANC over the next three months! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...munitybuzz/...
Please add me & many thanks for the superb editing & friendliness. Looking forward to meeting y'alls.
FTer I am, thought BR referred to the IATA code for EVA Airways who's used ANC as their refueling stop for over a decade.

Aug 30 - Sept 2
A buddy and I are flying LGA-ORD-ANC-SFO-JFK leaving NYC on Aug 30 and returning on Sept 2 (3 via red-eye from SFO).
We are planning on heading to Prince Williams Sound to do a 3-day kayaking trip to Blackstone Bay. Any Kayakers interested in joining? We are both expert backpackers but are relatively inexperienced kayakers. Ideally, we're looking for a freelance kayak guide to come with. We would handle cooking, camp prep, etc. PM if you know anyone interested in a little end of season adventure.

Ha. Never thought of a BR in that manner. Have thought of a BR as a WC (and no, not those WC's
)

I'm planning to be in ANC September 6 to 7. I'm scheduled to arrive on the 6th from ORD at 13:36. I'm scheduled to depart for IAH on the 7th at 20:38.
I have no plans for the 6th. The 7th, I'm thinking about taking an all-day tour on Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery and doing the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop.
I currently have a reservation at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Check the day cruise schedules to make sure it'll work for you. Stuff really starts shutting down right around the middle of September (9/15). Assuming all options are still available to you while you're in Alaska, I'll point out that you can do day cruises out of both Whittier and Seward. Whittier is a little bit closer to ANC (~1h vs 2.5h, although you can wait up to a half an hour to get through the one-lane tunnel to Whittier). Whittier cruises tend to see more glaciers and also traverse the protected (i.e. not choppy) waters of Prince William Sound, whereas Seward's cruises see a good bit more wildlife but fewer glaciers (although they usually include a trip to at least one large, spectacular glacier). Rates might be lower as you're off of peak, so that's a potential plus.
I made up a list of ANC hotel options and posted it in post #5 here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/20388098-post5.html. That post does touch a bit on safety, but basically, most major properties are in perfectly safe areas. As a single female traveler, you probably don't want to be walking alone at night in Mountain View or Fairview, but you won't be anywhere near those if you're at any hotel in town. Parts of Spenard can be a bit dicey ,but the part with the major hotels is fine (it's further up Spenard away from the airport where the illicit activity occurs). Downtown, especially anything on the west end of downtown (i.e. the Hilton and everything west), is perfectly safe to walk around at any time.
One thing I do miss about moving out of ANC was getting to play host to the hordes of FlyerTalkers who used to come up on mileage run fares. Travel safe, everyone!
and a week long trip to enjoy Alaska in the future) I am less interested in the wild life and more into glacier viewing, will a cruise to Prince William Sound be better suited than a cruise to Kenai Fjords?I will be arriving ANC from DFW on 9/14 @ 7:40pm, and departing on 9/16 @ 8:55pm, which should give me a full day in town for city sightseeing.

*applause* Great minds think alike!
Enjoy the kayaking! Our group's time (25hrs) is too short to join though you know our times thus we could coordinate meeting up at a particular airport section.

That would be my recommendation. You can do the 26 Glacier Cruise, which is a high-speed catamaran that hops from glacier to glacier to glacier, or Major Marine Tours, which uses a slower boat and enjoys a slower pace around fewer glaciers. I've only done the 26 Glacier Cruise; it was nice, and I'd have no issues recommending it. I've also heard good things about Major Marine. (There might be a third company, but if so, I forget its name.)

Looks like I'll be on the ground, airside, and not on an aircraft, from about 1155p to 1230A on 18/19 Aug, if anyone is going to be @ ANC. Not sure yet if I'll have time to go to the BR or bring anyone in with me.

Count me in any plan! I'll let you guys work it out, I'm laid back this trip. Awaiting your plans to see how strongly to use Priceline booking on any downtown hotel or to be loyal to SPG ($219/night, unwilling to use 7000 pts this time). Did you want to share a hotel room/suite?
Please add me & many thanks for the superb editing & friendliness. Looking forward to meeting y'alls.

Anyone want to go to Jens the evening of the 31st of August? It would have to be after 9 pm or so, as my flight doesn't land until 7:34.
I went there many years ago with eastwest and remember it as having the BEST salmon...

It will be hard to give up a confirmed F seat for ANC-SEA-IAH-PIT
