Thinking about trip to FAI for Nrthrn Lights, either Jan or Mar. Short trip- maybe 2-3 nites at most. Beyond somewhat warmer weather in March what are things to consider. Up on Alaskan so probably thru ANC one-way or another. (award trip via AA).

It's a lot darker & colder in January. If you are coming through ANC, I would suggest late Feb. to early March for your visit. The Fur Rendezvous is going on then. A great winter carnival that ends with the start of the Iditarod. If it's clear, you can see the Northern Lights from ANC. A couple of days in Fairbanks lets you see the ice sculptures, visit Chena Hot Springs, North Pole and other sites.

Looks like I just miss you. I'm flying in on evening of June 7th

I recall a trip not so long ago to frigid Fairbanks in March where it was absolutely clear. The lights never came on. YMMV:rolleyes:

That same trip had a night in Chena Hot Springs that was completely overcast with clouds. Although you remember Fairbanks as frigid, I tend to remember the 30 below with a cutting wind that we had the next morning in Chena Hot Springs.

We saw no lights and froze our butts. :td:

On the off chance...

I don't know if anyone is around flying late Thursday night/Friday morning in ANC? Arriving from the Peninsula on the last flight of the night at 22:00 but have a long wait until my 0240 departure to the lower 48 - and working in the BR can only last so long at that time of night after a full day of work. If anyone is around that would like to meet up, please let me know.

Yeah, but you experienced The Real Alaska™. ;)

SeeYa and I had fun at the ice sculpture park, and I think everyone enjoyed the skijoring, so it wasn't a complete loss of a trip. :)

Since Jackal updated his signature not too long ago to keep our calendars clear for end of July. Any chance we will have a DO thread when he returns from BOM? Looking forward to start booking
