Orange and Vodafone are the main providers amongst a few smaller ones.
Coverage is pretty good all over the place, with a very few exceptions such as the top of the Carpathian mountains and perhaps while passing thru large forrests while enjoying the view from the train

Now if you want to go to Constanta there are plenty of InterCity trains available however, and I'm not 100% sure of this but during this past summer they were doing heavy modernization work on the rail lines the train speeds were quite restricted. I have a couple of friends that reported a journey which takes 2 hours or so taking double that.
Again, I'm not sure if the work would be completed by the time you and your family arrive. They're working to increase the train speeds to 200+ km/h
CarpatAir (V3) offers service from OTP-CND although not daily. It's a 40 min flight, can't beat that

Enjoy your trip and feel free to let me know if you have more questions.

Many of you did not post your city pairs. Please check the calendar to see if yours are missing. There's almost no point in adding you if we don't know where you're going! Post or PM me (or mcrt) sometime before you leave!

I was in Romania this past summer for a week, and my celly worked just fine. I had a global roaming card that I bought before I left the states, but the service was fine in Romania, and i went to Brasov, Sighsoara, Bucharest, and Constanta, wish I could remember who the provider was.. I dont know about buying a SIM card while in Romania, but i'm sure its possible..

I am intrigued with all you people going to Romania due to a flight price error, and a mileage run, due to the 7 day stay rule these trips are more of a vacation than pure MileRun. I wish you all the best of luck, as during my 22 country, 11 week backpacking 2006 trip, Romania was the "most difficult" country for me, and Bucharest by far the worst city among the 37 cities I visited.

If you get a chance visit Bulgaria, and the black sea beaches there are much better than Mamamia beach in Romania, Mamamia seemed a bit dirty to me.

Whew even for the miles, I dont think I would do a week in Romania, best of luck to all..

Oh i spent some time on the trains there and it was hit or miss. Took a lovely clean train from Brasov to Bucharest.. but then my next train from Bucharest to Constanta, had no AC(this was July), smelled, no food car, and was SLOW.. when i mean SLOW, i mean the trip took 5hrs, instead of the posted 3hrs..

Just a few things to people, dont bother to buy first class tickets for Romanian trains, there is NO DIFFERENCE between first and 2nd class. At the Gare du Nord station in Bucharest, you need to have a train ticket to go inside the station(where the ATM, McDonalds, thieves, beggers, pickpockets) if you dont have a ticket, and you look like a tourist you can get a fine, its not a big fine, but more of a hassle..

I learned from my travels while the trains in Germany are as nice as domestic USA flights, that busses are better transport option than trains in eastern europe.. Still that didnt explain my Turkish vodka/cigarette smuggeling bus I took to get to Bulgaria..

Ahhh its a lovely country for sure, and the Transylvania region is awesome, but be strong as the trip will have a few hiccups for sure!!

YVR - AMS 6/30/07
AMS - OTP 7/1/07
OTP - YVR 7/7/07

Most likely will hang around Romania (but not necessarily around Bucharest) for the week; would like to extend stay by a day or two if I can get NW to honor the terms of the fare.

Love to visit off the beaten path destinations.

I can't see why this won't be a problem for you to stay longer. It should be a no brainer
