Beside it being cheap, it's a great way to meet other people when you're traveling alone.
I did backpack and hostel for a year. My pack has more miles than any other piece of gear.

Arrive on 8/11/07 to Bucharest
For now, the plan is:
Spend 1 night in Bucharest
Take a flight or train on the 12th to Istanbul, Turkey
Return on 8/17/07 to Bucharest
Take flight on 8/18/07 back to YVR via AMS -- Have about a 6 hour layover in AMS.

I kinda regret spending 7 days in OTP as I noticed others only have one or two days layover there. However I like the train ride idea to Bulgaria, Turkey & Moldova.
We will be there in June
Arrive Bucharest June 9th @ 5 p.m.
Depart Bucharest June 17th @ 6 a.m.
Tranisting through AMS on June 9th and June 17th with 4-5 hours layover each way.

We did our fist tri tyo EAstern Europe in Nov. It was kind of cold. February is cold to in Central Europe. Despite the cold you can find enough to do.

I have done hostelling with family as well. Often it's better and cheaper to get a hotel. We have hosteled in Budapest, Prague, Austria and Portugal.

For a family, it may be cheaper to stay in a hotel instead of hostel, since hostel usually charge you based on per person or the private room can cost pretty high.

However, if you're a single traveler like me, it really helps to stay in a hostel .. especially when you're looking for things to do and try to interact with fellow travelers without having to go to the bar.

I was originally thinking about doing that, but I realized that with all of the dates that people were getting it would quickly become very difficult to maintain. If it were just Nov and Dec, fine, but all the way til Sept...

As the thread grow I would use the thread search and find all of the posts with your month. If someone else want to compile a list I won't be offended. Does anyone know of a shared online calendar that we can all put our info on? Also try to post your info on Airtroductions. We might find some flights in common there.

We have two trips one to Libya (8 nights) and Holland (2 nights) and one to Romania (12 nights);

YVR-AMS-BUH-MXP-TIP Departing March 28 for the 32 hour flight!

TIP-MXP-AMS April 7

AMS-YVR April 9

YVR-AMS-BUH August 16

BUH-AMS-YVR August 28

Not sure what we're planning, probably renting a car and seeing something of rural Romania and Bulgaria. Looking forward to reading everyone else's trip reports before we go.

Hi all,

For those that cannot find good hotel rates in Bucharest during their stay I'm recommending a company called RomVision (www.romvision.ro) which rents apartments throughout the city center for rates lower than the major hotels.
I have used them once and they've been great. I know the offer an airport or train station shuttle for 20EUR, and if you stay over x nights it's free. I stayed for 2 weeks and it was free. They have free hi-speed internet included, local phone calls included, maid service every 2 or 3 days, full kitchen, fridge (although I'm sure you're not going to BUH on vacation to cook ), overall they were extremely helpful and great when I used them - this was in Jun-Jul of this year.

For those of you not planning to stay in Bucharest and that have train trips to nearby countries in mind, have a look at the offers from Rail Europe: www.raileurope.com and look for the Balkan FlexiPass (http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/pa..._flexipass.htm)
