As an example of how strange the FT names convention is, I have met Hunki and Punki a dozen or so times around the world and have never called Hunki other than Joe, and yet never called Punki anything except Punki.

Unfortunately, it takes me so long to remember any name at all that
by the time I meet you folks in person, your FT handle has permanently
taken your allotted space in my brain! I don't mind being called violist
(vee-O-list) or even vy-O-list - prefer it to "Mike," actually.

As for using "real names" on posts - I started off signing off on posts with my real name, but then stopped, primarily as I realised that the world wasn't that large, and a degree of anonimity wasn't a bad thing. But again, once you've met someone face to face, it's easier to build up that level of trust.

And no, I have no problems with anyone calling me AJ! It just gets funny when I'm in the same room in a Do with ajamieson and we both end up turning after hearing a shout (or drunken holler as it might be ) for an "AJ".

When someone has known me for more than three or four years, yes.
If they just met me, its okay.
When TH gets called that, she cringes, but its better than hey you.

I use Owlchick for almost every other forum that I belong to, so I don't mind answering to it, but I think some people may not be comfortable calling a grown woman "chick."
Everyone who met me at the first San Diego dinner I went to will always remember me as Owlchick because I'd followed Redbeard's advice and gone to it wearing an owl costume.

What's funny is when you go to a Do, and the FTers you know really well are beyond calling you by your FT handle, and they're beyond calling you by your real name..they're using goofy nicknames, etc. And some "new" FTer walks up, hears the goofy nickname, and just assumes that's your handle.
I was--and still occasionally am--called "Guvnah" a few times by a good FT friend at a London Do, and a couple of FTers kept asking, "OK, so you're Governor? Governor What??"

If I'm with FTers and someone uses my real name, I sometimes forget to answer.
I was introduced at a couple office parties as missydarlin, that was wierd.

I was answering to swag long before I came to Flyertalk, heck, before there was a world wide web, even. So that's fine. But I will answer to Mark as well.
