From reading the Privileges section on the Venice Card website, it looks like we can pick up our Venice Card in the lobby of our hotel. But I'm not 100% sure on that.

Will we need adapter or converter for electrical appliances?

I always bring my own adapter.

This was discussed several hundred threads ago and you can be excused for missing it. Yes, Italian plugs are a weird three-pronged deal and you'll need a converter. Possible the hotel can supply you one but I wouldn't hold my breath will all the FT'ers staying there.
And the voltage is 230 so anything that doesn't automatically convert will need a converter. Electric shavers and computers usually have a built-in converter. Hair dryers and other simpler electrical stuff usually don't.
Word to the wise for those who haven't traveled to Europe before. Plugging a 110 device into a 230 outlet is interesting. You get some combination of fire, smoke, blown fuses and lethal shock.
Depends on conditions......

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The Dovster has landed and taken off again. He should be arriving in FLL soon.

How did it go? Well....

I called the deli this morning and placed an order for 2 salami sandwiches and two giant potato knishes along with a surprise. The owner thought the surprise was great and went along.

We gave Dov (notice I said we) a pastrami sandwich on white bread with lettuce, mayo, ketshup, mustard. Let me tell you... it looked gross.

He arrived right on time and we (my husband & I) found him in the Int'l arrivals area in EWR Terminal C. He didn't sleep much, and all he really wanted was a cigarette, so I obliged and took him outside. After a couple of them we went inside to a Starbucks where Dov announced he didn't drink coffee (we don't like Starbucks either) and asked for a Coke. Starbucks doesn't sell soda, so off I went looking for Coke while Dov had another cigarette (3 in 15 minutes - I know how he felt) while my husband was standing there with a perfect stranger... well, a stranger ;). He did say he wasn't hungry.

Yeah, right. He had a kosher salami sandwich, and no matter how tired & nicotine deprived he was, he was going to eat it. So, I "suggested" which sandwich to take out of the bag.

Poor man unwrapped the sandwich and was faced with WHITE BREAD which he opened and said "IT'S GREEN." So, he's sitting there with 2 strangers bearing what they thought was the supreme gift for a Brooklyn-food deprived man, and he's staring at a mess on white bread with LETTUCE. I quickly told him the story, blamed Obscure2k, and pointed him to the correct sandwich, which disappeared quite quickly. Hummm, maybe CO first ISN'T all that great :D.

I have to say that if it were I getting off a 12 hour flight with 2 hours of sleep, even in First, I could not be nearly as friendly, polite and as nice as Dov was. It was a pleasure to spend an hour with him in beautiful Newark airport.

As for OUR trip to the airport... well, we got stuck in a local police arrest. 5 minutes after leaving our house the police came screaming past us, stopped in the middle of the road and pulled their guns on a teenager in a Passat. I wasn't about to drive past that, and they blocked the road while 5 more cars came (along with the dog) and arrested this kid. I was starting to panic about getting to the airport on time, and luckily we only lost about 10 minutes before the police let us go.

5 miles further up the road traffic comes to a halt again. This time a restaurant right near the edge of the road is blazing, with black smoke billowing up and flames shooting out, while the firefighters were spraying down the building. This was right near the entrance to the parkway.

Our 30-35 minute ride to the airport took a little over an hour. But, we did get to see our civil servants at work. Come to think of it, neither of us had ever seen either of the sights we saw this afternoon - and we grew up in NYC. This is the burbs - nothing ever happens where we live.

CO couldn't get their act together and we weren't sure if the flight was leaving on time (which it was on one departure board) or 1 hour late (on another departure board). So,understandiby, Dov didn't want to take any chances and left us after 1 hour to make sure he didn't miss his connection to FLL.

As for us, we took off south to do part of a longer mattress run to maintain Diamond with Hyatt.

So, you can say that I met up with Dov and did a mattress run all in the same day ;).

I wish I could join all of you in VCE - it sounds like a great trip! Thanks for letting me be a small part of it here.

BTW - The cashmere jacket IS DELICIOUS.

Questions for Marco Musco?

Dear FT'rs attending the November 20 Meet. I am arriving about 5 days prior to other FT'rs. If you have any question which you would like me to direct to Marco Musco, please post*here. Marco knows everything! He was born and raised in VCE and he is very honest...an all-around good guy.

Good job, Mary. Thanks for giving me credit for helping to gross him out. I do believe that I can tåke credit for salami or pastrami or corned beef on white bread with lettuce and mayo. IIRC, also suggested pretty nasty sushi , all with tentåcles, in a box marked "Kosher." BTW, even I appreciated his fine cashmere jacket, his wit, savoir faire and fine chapeaux
Congrats, Mary.

GREAT story, Mary2e!! Thanks for sharing.
I was wondering today how the Dovster's trip was going.
I'm sure he'll post tomorrow from the FLL library.
Let's hear HIS version of the EWR Meet!! ;).

First, upon arrival at HotelAiMori if you cannot wait until you get to your room, there are 2 beautiful bathrooms at the far end of the lobby on your left. These are unisex.
Prada the Women's store, which is different from the Men's store (although they are side by side, only the Women's store has a toilet). Enter the store and ask to see some items..e.g. wallet, shoes, etc. Then, excuse yourself, with a knowing look and go down the hallway on the right. The bathroom is on the left. It has a kind of funny lock, so pay attention.. This bathroom is always immaculate.

Gritti Palace Hotel I like this one because it is close to a vaporetto stop. Enter the hotel and, again, with the knowing look, walk past the austere gentleman at the front desk and when you come to the hallway (opposite the bar), take a left. The bathroom is on the right at the end of the hall. BTW, if you need to have your hair done, the Gritti Salon is really really good).

Harry's Bar Walk in, go just past the bar and turn left. Walk upstairs and take a right. Very very clean bathroom with good lighting for freshening make-up.

public restroom (I know, I know, but sometimes it is unavoidable), very clean pay W.C. in San Bartolomeo Square, near the Spagnoli store. This is close to the Rialto and on your way back to the hotel from the San Marco area.

Fiaschetteria Toscana restaurant also, close to the Rialto Bridge
and on the Strada Nove a few minutes from the hotel. Walk in, go past the very vigilant cashier/owner at the desk and take a hard right turn opposite the desk. The bathroom is up the stairs.
Peggy Guggenheim Museum on Dorsidoro. Quite clean for a public facility.
Worst-case scenario: You find yourself in the gardens near the Arsenale, visiting the site of the Bienalle (actually, I think there is an architecure exhibit going on now). The public toilets are near the gift shop. Not great, but acceptable. Have kleenex in your purse for this scenario.
If I think of any others, I'll add to this post. If anyone else has some suggestions, please feel free to comment.

Bump. VERY IMPORTANT. These are for the ideal scenario. However ...
Questions on same subject to O2K and others:

Can one run into a bar/coffee shop/hotel of some moderate size and divine the location of the facilities? Is it fairly regularly located? i.e., in Paris I learned all the corner cafes had downstairs toilets and they were always easy to find in the center of the bar. It's like one single architect designed all the cafes. Xavier9 (Munki, M8K) is good at figuring this out and directing me, otherwise his trips with me would be hell. For Venice it would be good to understand the general plumbing -- below street level, on second floor, in lobby.

Any advice for availability, not quality? BTW the absolute worst facility in all my travels is still the paid toilet at the VCE train station. However, I was glad it was there when I needed it (it's off to the right of the departure tracks.)

And any advice on how to use the unisex porcelain hole in floor facilty? I think this is covered on another FT thread, but I'm still incompetent.

You must have led a VERY sheltered life if that's the worst toilet you've ever found! ;)

OK, now I KNOW you've let a sheltered life! :D

It does imply that. You might have to ask for that when you purchase the card. (I haven't purchased one yet so I don't know for sure.) The main drawback would be that you wouldn't be able to use any of the benefits of the card until you got to the hotel.

I think I'll be buying a Venice Card that includes the Alilaguna waterbus transport to and from the airport, and therefore I will have to pick it up upon arrival at VCE. ;)

If there is a staircase, you can be pretty sure that the toilet is upstairs. If you go into a hotel, the bathrooms will always be close to the bar...perhaps, down a hallway. I have never seen a downstairs bathroom in VCE. So, look to the lobby and look for staircases and always make friends with the bartender for the best advice ;)

:D

It was the nastiest toilet I ever found. Ever. Perhaps it's under new management :)

I accept, but am not happy with, picking my way through **** on the floor aka Venice train terminal 2001. It must have been a very busy/bad weekend in November for them to have allowed the accumlation of "stuff." Very un-Italian, but perhaps one of those strikes that occur randomly?

I would prefer any public facility in India, Thailand , Mexico or south Los Angeles to that. It was a bad day for me and the station attendents.

On the other subject, I'm not naturally good at squats, and don't expect to see them in major metro areas, but can deal with them as they occur with or without running water. I just don't know what one should do when using a clean but waterless facility and leaving a mess. Does one go to the nearest shop an ask for a bottle of water to flush the stuff, or should one have known enough to bring that water with them?

OK, it sounds like you encountered an unusually bad situation at the Venice train station. I've used the public toilets there a couple of times and never found them that bad. So either I was lucky or you were unlucky. Probably the latter.

As for the "clean but waterless" facility, well, if there's truly no running water (or it runs only a few hours a day or something like that), there SHOULD be a big huge barrel full of water nearby (either inside or outside the bathroom), with a pan or bucket in it that you use to scoop up some of the water and pour it down the toilet to flush it. If there isn't, then there's really not much you can do, I'm afraid. :(
