I was actually around the LAX area with the Mrs. this past Sunday Afternoon as I had just landed from my MIA-LAX fight and had a 4 hour layover before LAX-PHX. Went to a brewery in Manhattan Beach near the Pier. I should have checked in this thread to see if you all were around.

Glad I saw this thread, as I will be in the area over the weekend and since rental cars are absorbedently expensive these days I guess brewery hopping is a good way to go too 😀👍

I definitely do not recommend absorbing too many dents with a rental car, as the resulting costs could be exorbitant for you and/or your insurance company

I'm currently planning to attend the INCOSE International Workshop at the Torrance Marriott Sat 28 Jan thru Tue 1 Feb

my former USAF colleagues are debating venue/s for a Mon evening happy hour meetup, which means Sun (probably also happy-hour-ish time, but I haven't yet seen the final agenda) is my most likely window for FTing

Have you been able to pin down your availability in for this trip? There are a multitude of places to go for happy hour in the Torrance/South Bay as well as for dining depending on what you're interested in.

Let us know what day/time/preferred bevands/preferred food(s) are.

I’m flying down late Sat; and colleagues’ chief choreographer announced a Mon evening brewery expedition (“pub crawl”) in El Segundo

unfortunately Sun evening is out; I have to meet up w a cousin in Orange County to deal with some estate stuff (both her parents passed suddenly a couple weeks ago)

that said, I *do* have a 1300-1500 window on Sun afternoon … most efficient use of my time would be a venue with food (truck or on-premises kitchen) in the central Torrance area; I’m perfectly fine with Hopsaint, but certainly open to other ideas

UPDATE

I'll be around Sat after ~1800 (AS added a one-off SEA-LAX at 2200 on Fri, arriving 0045); conference sessions are from ~1000 to ~1630

Sun afternoon as outlined above remains viable

staying at the Fairfield in El Segundo

Wow - who knew INCOSE and Boeing and jrl767 had so much pull at AS...

Sun afternoon as outlined above remains viable

staying at the Fairfield in El Segundo
Saturday options:

a) Meet at Hopsaint for brew and dinner ('tho note that this is 1800 on a Saturday)
b) Stay in the area and hit either King Harbor Brewery (@ 182nd / flatland territory) or King Harbor Brewery (RB Pier/International Boardwalk out on Santa Monica Bay) and Naja's Place (RB Pier/International Boardwalk)
c) Go further afield and hit The Honest Abe Cider House & Meadery (Carson) or switch to something a bit closer to your hotel (basically around the block) such as Smoky Hollow Tasting & Taproom/r6 Distillery (El Segundo)
d) Stay in the greater Torrance area and hit any number of the breweries there (https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/33784164-post48.html)

Part of it depends on whether you intend to make it to the Systems Thinking Roundtable @ 7 am on Sunday or not....

David

p.s. Depending on your selection(s), may be easier to move closer into Torrance rather than staying up in El Segundo - haven't heard much good things about the former Hacienda Hotel...

always a good choice
b) Stay in the area and hit either King Harbor Brewery (@ 182nd / flatland territory) or King Harbor Brewery (RB Pier/International Boardwalk out on Santa Monica Bay) and Naja's Place (RB Pier/International Boardwalk)
parking convenience at RB pier may be low-ish on Sat evening

Smoky Hollow/R6 looks *great*; there's also Surfridge Brewing a couple blocks from there
d) Stay in the greater Torrance area and hit any number of the breweries there (https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/33784164-post48.html)
Red Car and Yorkshire are basically brewpubs w full kitchens
food trucks at some other venues
  • Smog City has Bison Truck
  • Monkish has Bivrit Falafel
  • Strand has Bunz Gourmet Burgers
any one (or maybe two) of those are workable, as noted ... any other locals are welcome to weigh in (and of course join in)

oh I certainly intend to ... start time notwithstanding, those sessions have been my favorite part of the dozen or so INCOSE conferences I've attended -- given my late (or early, depending on one's perspective, lol) arrival, Sat ain't gonna be a late night regardless

I was at SMC one week a month ~Sep 2017 to ~Dec 2018 and spent a LOT of nights at that property; it falls into the "perfectly adequate" category, and the economics definitely work ... $115 vs $142 for the Courtyard opposite King's Hawaiian vs $207 at the Marriott

you can probably leave Boeing out of this; I've been gone longer than I was there

Looks like a number of LA locals are out of town so let's keep it simple.

Meet at Hopsaint at 1800 for drinks and dinner. Make the call from there as to where to go next.

As always, all are welcome to join!

Spring is in the air! What a perfect time for Red Cups, Jet Fuel Aromas and Animal Style Burgers. Shall we schedule another picnic in the park??
