Sounds very tempting... but will depend a great deal on how construction is progressing on my house.

(After all, Mike... we have to have a place in Coppell where you can go escape while visiting the family!)

mjm,

I would really like to do this! I was planning to go over Christmas but not gonna happen so this would be perfect.

Any chance of organizing a daytrip to JB for a little DVD-and-software shopping?

I think I owe you one more mug so (with the shopping) there's three reasons to make the trip.

I wonder if it costs a fortune from BCN?

Great to see you!! Really, really sorry I'm going to miss out on the second annual SIN run DO!!

Best wishes, Dave

If UA doesn't have the 6 day min stay requirement, I'll fly to SIN & attend. Hope to use sweet spots for these.

Ok, I have you all noted on the SIN RUN 2004 Do website. Looking forward to another great group.

mauld, you are the guest of honor for having initiated this little gathering in the first place. I am just playing secretary and logistics coordinator. : )

Sweet Willie, we shall hold out a good thought for your attendance, but hey, having a job is not the worst thing that could happen to a person. We can do this again (maybe even before Jan. '05) if you miss this round.

ws8n, Cool, see you aboard again?

auh2o, ain't that the truth. Pepper crabs are good therapy though for crushed dreams of going the big dance.

alanw, Fantastic! Hope you do come. A day trip to JB is certainly a possibility. I think I recall a few threads on this in either this forum or in Mileage Run. I have not done JB myself so will see if I can dig up that info for you. Anybody else recall the specifics on JB as a day trip?

chemist661, I think when fares drop there is going to be a mad rush by a few FTers for the best seats in C. Hope to see you there.

techgirl, sounds like you are pretty busy and I look forward to seeing the finished product. It is certain to spectacular! Shall I go ahead and add you to the maybe list on the webpage or do you want to wait until closer to the end of the year to make that call?

As for Chinese New Year being a possible spoiler for fares, I am not overly worried. Most fares from SIN to China, Hong Kong, and many of the countries to which residents of SIN return during the holiday are very high. Usually getting to SIN is quite reasonable. Plus we are a few days ahead of the curve doing this the previous weekend. Fares from NRT to SIN are cheap now and that is usually a good indicator. Keep your fingers crossed everybody and see you in SIN soon.

B747-437B posted the following last summer:

Malaysia

To get to Malaysia, the cheapest and easiest option is to take the MRT to Kranji station and then catch SBS public bus number 170 towards Johor Bahru. The bus runs every 5-10 minutes and costs S$0.80 in addition to the MRT fare to Kranji (about S$1-2 depending where you start from).

At the Woodlands checkpoint, you alight from the bus and clear outbound immigration (the lines are very short for "Foreign" passport holders since most Malaysian commuters use a special automated card system). Then you reboard the bus and ride across the causeway before alighting again on the Malaysian side. Here again, there are separate lines for Malaysians, Singaporeans and "Others" so there is no queue worth speaking of. In my case, I spent less than 10 seconds at the Singapore side and about 1 minute on the Malaysia side. The delay on the Malaysia side was only because the officer was making sure I had no Israel stamps in my well-used passport.

You can then reboard the 170 bus and travel to either the KMT railway station (first stop) or the Larkin Bus Station (second stop). If your destination is Johor Bahru, I reccomend the railway station stop as it is right adjacent to the giganctic City Square mall where you can get some excellent deals on shopping. You can board the 170 bus at the same stops on the way back, or take the Malaysian "CausewayLink" service. There is also the "Singapore-Johore Express" bus service that runs nonstop from downtown Singapore to Larkin terminus.

On the way back, I was stopped by Singapore customs who wanted to check if I had bought any pirated CDs/DVDs but the entire thing took less than 5 minutes once they established I was clean. There was a horrible traffic jam on the causeway though, but actual immigration formalities took less than a minute each.

United has released fares that do not require 6 day stays. It is pricing out at just under $700 from San Diego or Carlsbad before I use my 15% off cert. The fare basis code is VXSP32, which is upgradeable with Sweet Spots.

MIN STAY - RETURN FIRST SUNDAY AFTER
DEPARTURE OUTBOUND TRANSPACIFIC SECTOR

Fare expert Darren spotted this fare on a brief break from his law studies.

My ticket is purchased, and flight info sent to mjm for the website. I arrive near midnight on Friday, and leave at the crack of dawn on Monday. I'm upgraded on 3 of 4 segments - not a bad starting position.
