WAS in June

I was on the chat earlier this week and there was some interest in doing a get together in my back yard. Hah -- I don't have a back yard, since I live in a condo, but I checked with El Presidente and he says we can have something in his back yard, the Ellipse.

If this is going to happen, I'll need to gauge interest now to see who will be coming. Also, I'll need a significant amount of help with the planning since I just started a new job!

So, who's interested? And who will help me?

techgirl Mar 6, 2002 11:22 am

Tony -

Do it the last weekend in June and I'll definitely be there since I've got a sorority convention in DC at the same time. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Getting married in DC in June, so depending on when it is I would be interested.

baraboodish Mar 6, 2002 12:18 pm

I'm interested but the last two weekends are already booked for me.

kluau88 Mar 6, 2002 12:37 pm

I'd be interested http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

doc Mar 6, 2002 12:41 pm

I'm there often, so it's just a question of the dates for me http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

mashav Mar 6, 2002 12:47 pm

I'd be interested

greggwiggins Mar 6, 2002 1:12 pm

It's not a sorority convention, but I interviewed the president of the Old Dominion Brewing Company (a very good microbrewery in Ashburn near IAD -- their beer is sold at Dulles as well) for my column last week and he told me about their plans to hold a beer festival outside the brewery on the first Saturday in June. Lots of beer, food, beer, live music and beer if anybody likes those kinds of things.

(edited to fix stupid grammatical mistake)

Also interested, Ive been meaning to get there for a while, to see friends new baby ( about 6 months old by now) Its like a Seinfeld episode.

ElmhurstNick Mar 6, 2002 3:16 pm

I'm always interested in BWI/DCA as I have close friends there, but unfortunately the first three weekends in June are all taken and the last one is on the verge of being taken as well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

SFOJFK Mar 6, 2002 7:10 pm

I'm up for anything in DC. Give me a timeframe and maybe I could even help plan things.

kokonutz Mar 7, 2002 12:24 pm

I've always wondered what DC is like. I'd be willing to cash in some miles to go there!

TrojanHorse Mar 7, 2002 2:28 pm

markbach Mar 7, 2002 2:43 pm

I'm interested, I could even help plan if you need me to.

chexfan Mar 7, 2002 3:02 pm

Trey Anastasio and his band is playing at Merriweather on the 22nd. I may be in the area that weekend.

kokonutz Mar 7, 2002 8:46 pm

Chex: cant you see how unhealthy it is to plan whole seasons around some has-been band/band member's touring schedule...

Huh? I have WHAT kind of tatoo from the '88 summer tour?

Uh, nevermind...

TribeFlyer Mar 8, 2002 6:42 am

I'll be around any weekend EXCEPT the 29-30th. Count me in.

mdtony Mar 8, 2002 9:00 am

Okay, sounds great. I'll work out the dates and such with those who have so generously offered to help out.

Now, a few questions for you folks. I figure folks will be getting in on Friday evening, so we could kick things off with a happy hour or something along those lines. I'm thinking we should do a dinner on Saturday, and a brunch on Sunday.

What else would you folks like to do? Don't say tour the White House, because I don't think they've opened that up yet to the general public. But there are a lot of "touristy" attractions in DC that are free, such as the Smithsonian, the National Zoo, and so on. There are also a lot of other things that tourists never go to, such as the National Aroboretum. Do you folks want to do something like that on Saturday during the day? Or maybe you could come on out and shudder with horror as you watch me pilot a Cessna 152.

I'm thinking that we should do each event in a different section of DC. We could do the brunch down on the Waterfront, we could do the dinner in Georgetown, and we could do the happy hour -- well, hell, you folks wanna do it at my little club? Here's a review.

mdtony Mar 11, 2002 7:27 am

I'd done a little more thinking about this and here's the weekends that I think will work. We can't do it the first weekend in June because there's something going on in Chicago. I'm going to toss out the next weekend because people may actually want to spend a weekend at home or something.

So that leaves us with three options. We can go with June 14, 15, and 16; June 21, 22, and 23, or June 28, 29, and 30.

Please indicate your first and second choices of weekends.

Thanks, guys.

The Smithsonian Folklore Festival is always the last week of June and the first week of July. Free. Not that this would interest anyone, I just thought I'd throw that in. I probably will come out to DC in June sometime for two days (Monday & Tuesday) maybe the 24 & 25. Can't plan that far ahead.

Linda

greggwiggins Mar 14, 2002 7:16 am

The last half of the month would be best for me, but I could probably attend at least some events on any weekend in June.

And while I haven't ever attended one of these things and won't know what I'm doing (no change there, really,) I'm also available to pitch in and help with the organizing and logistics.

mdtony Mar 14, 2002 9:05 am

Looking at the responses so far, it's looking like most people like the weekend of the 28th to the 30th, so that's what I'm going to go with. Markbach and SFOJFK, I'll be dropping you guys an e-mail and we can try to figure out what to do. But my idea is to do a happy hour on Friday, dinner on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday.

I'd like to do something on Saturday afternoon, and I'd love some feedback on what you folks would like to do.

TrojanHorse Mar 14, 2002 9:36 am

Great!!!, works for me

Let me help in making this a little more interesting too. Maybe we could organize a group lunch and tour at the World Bank as well. (tour is free but sorry, no such thing as a free lunch!) Not guaranteed I will always be here (darn consultant contracts) but with a list of names, we could arrange visitor passes.

Other activities could also include:
monument tours (for those who visit from outside)
Dinner cruise on Potomac or afternoon brunch at Sequioa in Georgetown.

Just my 2 thoughts worth.

This would be really cool! Do you think you could set this up for Saturday afternoon? That way, folks could sleep off their hangovers and have a lot of fun!

worldbanker Mar 15, 2002 7:02 am

Sorry, it would have be Monday - Friday during business hours. Other activities though could be over the weekend.

Hmmm. I'm not sure that will work because most people will probably be getting in in the afternoon or early evening. I know that some folks who are from the West Coast have expressed interest and those folks will have to catch the 6:00 AM flight to get here by 1:30, assuming that they get a non-stop. Throw in a transfer and at best they'll get here at 3:00.
