Since I live nearby. I want to join. Maybe even help. Only available last part of the month. May I suggest a visit to Goddard Space Center, if possible? Often they open on weekends for tours.
For those who are available during the week.: meet your COngressman? For that you need an appointment.

thezipper Mar 15, 2002 5:53 pm

Although this may not be as popular as Goldlust's "list", but add me too! June looks pretty open for me at the moment, so e-mail with the particulars when you set it up.

techgirl Mar 17, 2002 10:04 am

It looks like two of my sorority sisters are game for joining us for at least some of the FT events that weekend... I'm looking forward to it.

Time to decide now whether to stay at the Marriott (which is our official convention hotel) in the room block.

All things equal, I think I'm going to do my usual reservation at the Capitol Hilton and then look at switching to a Free Friday/Saturday with Starwood if that works out better.

i need to drop by this forum more often... i missed two things close to me this weekend! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

i will check fares for this... i have friends in DC (and i'm very political, so i just love the town in general).

any recommendations for a 'cheap' hotel... i am a recent college grad and have been traveling too much (read: i'm poor!).

I haven't been to DC in about a year, but Priceline normally has 4* hotels at $40 - $50...I've had the Renaissance, Churchill, and Wyndham at that price point.

Well, since you have friends in the area, there's always their couch for free!

To tie this to frequent fliers, the crew for some airlines stay at the Westin Fairfax and the Washington Hilton.

ChanelCinq Mar 19, 2002 1:07 am

I am destined not to go to DC. I purchased tix the weekend of May 3 - 5. Then as I was planning my friends bachlorette party it dawned on me that her wedding was that Saturday.

Now the weekend you guys are having the DC do I’ll be in Miami visiting a friend.

I guess I am just not supposed to be in DC. I would really like to go since I have only been once in my adult life and that is when I worked for the airlines. I did some sort of whirlwind mileage run (without the mileage) and took the red eye in and an evening flight back out.

The Westin Fairfax has some non-refundable stuff for $109.

Right now I'm booked at the Capitol Hilton at the same rate ($109).

Too bad the Free Weekends aren't good at the St. Regis or I would move across the street...

That's a great price for a great hotel. If you stay there, I am sure you will like it, and it's centrally located and right by the Dupont Circle Metro stop.

Folks, I'm on the road right now but rest assured, I'll keep on top of this thing and make sure it works out well!

avmba Mar 21, 2002 10:56 am

I'll try and make it. FYI, for anyone coming from Southern California (or thinking about it) AA has a $128 fare plus tax out of SAN. I booked a May trip for $150 RT (one day stayover req'd, can travel on weekends)

Hope this helps!

dhacker Mar 22, 2002 8:57 am

Please add me to the list. I'll be in town and should be able to make at least one event.

markbach Mar 22, 2002 12:47 pm

unless something drastic happens, it looks like I'm confirmed as well. Since I assume that kokonutz will be banished from the bedroom to the couch to the doghouse, is the kokocouch available that weekend? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

lmlinder Mar 22, 2002 6:07 pm

Wish whlinder & I could come but last weekend in June we'll be on our honeymoon!
Can't wait to make one of these WAS get togethers!

SFOJFK Mar 23, 2002 11:21 am

I'm definitely in. Company is shutting down the week of the 4th of July so getting time that weekend won't be a problem. Again, Tony if you need help, I'm available.

mdtony Mar 24, 2002 10:13 am

Okay, guys. So far it looks like we've got this list of folks coming.

I'm counting 16 potential folks, including me.

I'm still looking for things to do on Saturday afternoon. I looked to see if the Orioles are playing -- Camden Yards is a treat, even if the Orioles' owner is a real jerk and the team sucks. Unfortunately, they'll be playing in the evening so that's probably out unless you folks would rather do that instead of dinner.

greggwiggins Mar 24, 2002 10:29 am

It's not going to a fancy restaurant for a sit-down dinner by any means, but I've done this and it's a lot of fun. Camden Yards IS a treat, the owner IS a jerk, especially as far as Washingtonians and northern Virginians who want a team of their own are concerned; but since (in prior seasons) they let you bring food into the ballpark dinner could be some carryout seafood from the stalls at the old Lexington Market, which is about a five minute walk from the stadium, followed by a post-game sampling of the liquid pleasures found along the streets and docks of Fells Point. (Getting that night's hotel rooms in Baltimore, not DC, would be recommended if this plan were to be followed.)

markbach Mar 24, 2002 10:44 am

Fri 7:05pm vs Phila
Sat 7:05pm vs Phila
Sun 1:35pm vs Phila

I'm interested in either Friday or Sunday...

mdtony Mar 28, 2002 8:40 am

Well, it doesn't look like the Camden Yards thing is a hit so I will bag it for now unless a lot of people speak up. Besides, if you think about it, we're talking $20 a ticket, plus another $15-20 for food and drinks, so by the time you're doing with that, I can probably get us a pretty nice sit down dinner.

techgirl Mar 28, 2002 11:31 am

While Camden Yards sounds fun for another trip, my "other" requirements will have me needing to stay within DC both nights.

I'm all for a nicer dinner....

mdtony Mar 29, 2002 8:06 am

Well, dinner it is, then.

Faye Mar 30, 2002 6:03 pm

Don't rely on eating at Camden Yard. It's expensive and not very good. That's how they make money. I'm not sure if they still have them But NASA has open houses once a month on Sat or Sun. Also in SUitland is a museum open to the public by appt only. They repair old aiplanes for museums.

richard Mar 31, 2002 6:28 pm

I would love to join one day or for dinner. Haven't checked this forum in a while due to being out of town but I am very interested in a FlyerTalk get together here in my "new" home.

Hmmm. Let me see if we can do a tour of the College Park airport or the place where they store the aircraft that they couldn't fit into the Air and Space Museum. For those of you who don't know, the College Park airport is the oldest continuously operarting public airport in the country.

However, these things will require driving. So, before I check around on them, who will have a car?

greggwiggins Apr 1, 2002 11:41 am

My Honda Accord will be available.

I also think the Suitland, MD aircraft restoration shop mentioned earlier is the "Garber facility" of the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum, which is opened for tours one weekend a year or by appointment.

markbach Apr 1, 2002 1:08 pm

I may have a car, or I may take the train down, I haven't decided yet.

Faye Apr 2, 2002 7:44 am

I have a car

SFOJFK Apr 2, 2002 9:31 am

I should have a rental that week.

mdtony Apr 3, 2002 8:08 am

So, it looks like we have three cars, plus mine, and maybe a fourth for 16 people. If we get the fourth, I'd be okay with it, but let's put it like this. While I technically can carry four people in my car, if you folks think coach seating is bad, you haven't been in the back seat of my car.

markbach Apr 3, 2002 9:38 am

Exactly. 3 Adults in the back of my Ford Escort is not a Good Thing(tm).

mdtony Apr 7, 2002 8:54 pm

It doesn't look like we will have enough vehicles to do the little trip on Saturday. I'll find something that works that's in the city so that folks can take the Metro there or something like that.

Faye Apr 8, 2002 6:34 pm

I can clean out my mini van. It will seat 7. That's enough.

mdtony Apr 9, 2002 7:56 am

Thanks, Faye. I'll get in touch with the College Park Airport today and see what I can find out.

Faye Apr 9, 2002 4:42 pm

Now I forgot to warn people. My van is used mainly to haul stuff. While it is in excellent running condition. The air conditioner does not work. I will try to get it to a repair shop before than.

mashav Apr 18, 2002 5:08 pm

Not sure of my availability on Friday, but I'm open on Saturday and Sunday. Happy to do shuttling around, too -- I can fit 4 (plus myself) in my convertible.
Would love to join in the fun!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

ljp99 Apr 24, 2002 9:22 am

Also will have a car that weekend (with room for 3).
Trying to priceline a room with the $5 extra as we speak.

Just won Sheraton Tysons Corner $40/nite.

mdtony Apr 27, 2002 5:38 pm

Okay, guys, I am just about set with the planning. I need to confirm some prices and then we will be good to go. There's one thing that is definitely on, and that is the Friday night happy hour. Now, I know the ownership of this place pretty well and promise that we will be well taken care of. Hell, I may even get behind the bar for you guys on Friday night, when we kick this thing off with a happy hour starting at 7:00 PM.

More details to come.

SFOJFK Apr 27, 2002 7:36 pm

Coming in on the morning 28th on AA4825. Got a room at the HGI Franklin Square. Might look at the one on Embassy Row or Capitol.
