Hey folks,
I'm definitely going to the gathering for sure. Please count me in as I stated be4, Tony. Thanks. The distance seems to be an issue here. I think Buffalo Billiards, at the Dupont Circle metro stop, is worth considerring. [Edit: In fact, i think any nice place in downtown area with easy access to other places and has room for the lot of us is good. ] My thoughts are: 1. It's in downtown DC, close to Crystal city, MD border and VA. 2. It's good for socializing and there are so pool tables there. 3. The latest red line train runs at 2pm toward Silver Spring and 210pm toward Shady Grove. 4. If you want to go to other bars after, there are plenty bars and clubs in Adams Morgan open very late. Taking a cab to the hotels wouldn't be too expensive and too far. Just a thought..... If you folks want to do Buffalo Billiards, that's fine by me. The only catch there is I am sure you will have to wait for a pool table for quite some time on a Saturday night and I don't think they take reservations. But we could meet there, and go check out other places if you want.
As for the 9:00 PM time, the reason I chose that is because I figured you folks might want to explore the city on Saturday. But no worries, if you want to get together earlier, we certainly can do that. Are the other times okay? I can change them if you want. |
Dave & Busters is OK, but I'd also vote for Buffalo Billiards -- just because there are some people coming to this who would slip over to the Brickskeller and try to drink through their -- not 800 but ELEVEN HUNDRED -- different beers.
Seriously, if you are into craft beers or rare imports, the 'Brick' is one of the two or three best beer bars in the world and is well worth a visit. The website for the bar is at: www.thebrickskeller.com (edited to add URL) [This message has been edited by greggwiggins (edited 06-06-2002).] |
Md Tony has a good point, if it is going to be 9PM in the city on a Sat night.. getting a bunch of people in one place is not the easiest thing to do especially without a rez. Parking for those driving will be HELL
|
I wouldn't recommend driving to ANY FT event in DC. If someone is staying out near Tysons, parking the car at W. Falls Chruch Metro and then heading by metro in makes sense. For those at city-centered hotels, well they have two choices... metro or DC's (believe it or not) cheap cab system. The Maryland suburbanites are also well positioned for the metro.
<edited to add> The reason I suggested Buffalo Billiards was not so everyone could play pool but because it is a big place with lots of room to socialize. I've been there with groups of ten or more around one pool table. Some folks will shoot pool while others hang out and socialize. btw, a big http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif to mdtony for pushing this WAS gathering idea along over the last couple of months. I'm really liking the idea of the pool hall and nearby monument to beer. (or as Homer Simpson would say mmm... beer.
This also gives us food options beyond the "chain" restaurant and will make it much easier for folks who want to arrive late/earlier to find everyone. As far as activity... I could care less whether or not we get a pool table. Seeing you guys and sharing a few drinks is more than enough "activity" for me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif ------------------ I'm just in it for the F&F! |
And while the Brickskeller is internationally known primarily for its beer list, the recently-retired food critic of the Washington Post thinks they make the best hamburger in D.C.
And how many other menus have you seen that feature free-range buffalo? D&B's in Bethesda is still a possibility, but I think there's a fair-sized contingent that might be leaning toward billiards and beer by Dupont Circle. |
For all of geo's great input as of late ... is he even considering going to this event? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

You don't actually expect me to remember stuff from two months ago ... heck, you could drive to this from RDU anyway ... not that you would of course ...
|
Well, considering I booked a hotel room, and I have secured transportation at least one way, it looks very likely that I will be attending this event. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Please move me to the unable to attend list.
|
I would like to do happy hour and brunch. What are the locations? Thanks
|
If no one has plans for Saturday afternoon the 29th, I'll probably be going to either Tony & Joes or Sequoia's on the waterfront; I think those are the names, i'll find out for sure.
They are side by side and walking distance to GTown as well. It's an incredible place to people watch, sit outside and drink, eat and be merry. All the boats pull up to the dock on the Potomac. If its a nice day it will sure to draw a huge crowd Weather permitting of course. Anyone interested just post or email me. More details as it gets closer. Edited to add the day/date [This message has been edited by TrojanHorse (edited 06-08-2002).] |
Okay, here is the scoop.
Friday, 6/28: 7:30 PM until ???. Happy hour at Staccato, 2006 18th Street, N.W. 202-232-2228, accessible via the Dupont Circle or Woodley Park/Zoo Metro stops. Saturday, 6/29: 8:00 PM until ???. Pool and dinner at Buffalo Billiards, 1330 19th Street, N.W. 202-331-7665, accessible via Dupont Circle Metro. http://www.bedrockdc.com/ Sunday, 6/30: 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Brunch at Phillips Flagship, 900 Water Street, S.W. 202-488-8515. http://www.phillipsfoods.com/html/rdc.html Here are the people who I have as attending. Greggwiggins frequentmilesmaniac gleff sj bingosf back seat mileageaddict The numbers are not important for the first two events. However, for the third event, we MUST have a minimum of 20 people to get the group rate of $30 per person. I have 24 people, including myself, with four question marks. So, if I have you on the attendance list, and you are not coming, I MUST know by Monday so that I can fax back the contract. At that time, I will be coughing up a $100 deposit, so please don't hose me. Looking forward to seeing all of you in a few weeks. |
Tony,
thanks for organising this! I am actually +1 for the weekend. We will definitely be at the first two events, however, my friend is highly allergic to seafood, so we will, unfortunately, be skipping brunch. For Friday night: does Staccato serve food, or should we grab dinner elsewhere before/after showing up there? Thanks again for all your hard work on this. |
I'm a yes for Friday and Saturday, but a no for Sunday brunch.
If I have a sorority sister with me, it will be on Friday or Saturday night but she will likely show up later as she is doing dinners both nights over at the convention. I'm skipping out on those ($75 for alcohol-free hotel banquets? ech!) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
Tony, I am +1 for Saturday, but we don't be attending Sunday brunch. Thanks for setting all this up!
|
I'm up for everything.

Tony -
No for Friday (other plans) Yes for Sat nite Yes for Sunday brunch. Any specific recommendations for museums (I know there are many - want to know "cant miss" exhibits) for Saturday afternoon? |

Yes for Brunch for me, thanks! I am checking schedules for the Friday event but definite on Sunday.
|
Yes for Friday
Yes for Saturday No for Sunday |
Dear Tony,
Just learned that Sunday 6/30 is a good friend of mine's birthday. Please remove me from Sunday brunch event, thanks. If I'm able to show up, I definitely will do. Thanks for all the hardwork. FM Maniac ------------------ - I am a Freqnt Miles Maniac and a Ballroom Dance Miniac :-) - |
Count me in for friday nights festivities and sunday brunch.... so who will be the first to buy this birthday boy a drink?
|
Yes for Friday and Saturday, no for Sunday.
|
Yes for Friday, probably not saturday, no sunday...
|
Maybe if I can bum a ride from one of my friends on Friday.
No for Saturday. No for Sunday. |
Okay, so here is the new strategery. On Friday, I will talk with the folks who show up and see what we want to do for the Sunday brunch. We are way below the 20 that I need in order to get a room to ourselves, but I can call them on Saturday, tell them we have x people, and just make the reservation that way.
As for whether or not there's food at both places, yes, there is. It's mostly bar type food, but it will fill you up. On Friday, just head upstairs and that's where the festivities will be. We'll probably have to just meet at the front of Buffalo Billiards on Saturday because there is no way that we should pay $600 to reserve a room. Any questions? Ask them now, so that we avoid any confusion as the date approaches. |
A few of us made reservations for the Brickskiller on Saturday night for 7 pm. We'll grab a few brews there and dinner before we go to Buffalo Billiards.
We'll be heading over after 5:15 Mass so we might be in the bar before our reservation at 7 if folks are congretating. |
Good deal with the pre-Saturday activities. I'll likely be busy in the afternoon -- it's like I live in DC and have a life or something -- so I wouldn't be able to arrange anything that day.
Anyway, take it easy and I will see you in a couple of weeks, folks! |
I'm yes for Friday
Maybe for Saturday Yes for Sunday Woodly/zoo and DUpont CIrcle are quit a distance apart. Which is closer? I don't believe parking is too bad around 18th street. Haven't been in that area in awhile. Used to live nearby. |

Seeing how we're starting relatively early, though, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. |
I'm in for Friday and Saturday. No for Sunday brunch. Looking forward to it.
|
DONT try to park near Adams Morgan. Do yourself a favor and take a $4 taxi. The reality is by the time you find a spot to park you'll need a taxi anyway.
I'll be getting in from NYC between 4-6pm Friday, either into DCA or Union Station if I decide to forgo the miles to try out the Acela. I have a pressing engagement at 7:30am Saturday morning. Will there be a penalty for starting and ending relatively early at Staccato??? |
