Dear Jill,

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

MikeFly Nov 7, 2001 7:49 am

Just checked with the ExecPlat people in Raleigh. Jill is doing as expected today, still in ICU - anticipated to be in the hospital for 2 more weeks. Still no news on when she will be released from ICU to the surgical ward.

Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to one of AA's BEST people!

I just spoke to Jill's son.

She came out of the surgery talking, and is doing very well. She was enough of herself to argue with the nurses this morning about her coffee.

They do not know how long she'll be in ICU for, so please hold off on sending her flowers until she's in a proviate room. It may be 3 days, it may be 2 weeks before she leaves ICU. I'll post when that happens.

I've asked the family to send all of our love and best wishes to her.

If you want to get private messages to her, feel free to e-mail me and I'll make sure they get through.

Hi folks, I'm John, Jill's son from Los Angeles. I'm posting this update from the waiting room at the hospital she's in (amazing what you can do with with the right wires and a vacant phone jack). Here's the latest update on Mom:

She underwent surgery to repair the brain aneurysm (burst blood vessel/capaliary in the brain) on Tuesday this week and is in recovery. While she is not out of the woods yet by any means, she is doing well so far. She is still pretty heavily sedated as we speak. The surgeon says that while the surgery went well and her follow up tests show that she is progressing well there is still the chance that she may have a stroke as a side effect of the brain surgery. With this type of injury the brain can suffer visal spasms (not sure of the spelling) which can trigger a stroke. This can happen for up to two weeks after the surgery so we're not out of the woods yet. many of the other patients in the ward have had just that experience but so far we're three days past the operation and no stroke yet.

While she was talking and recognized both my brother and I right after the surgery, she has been more heavily sedated for the last couple days as she was getting agitated (imagine Jill doing that) and they were afraid that she would hurt herself while she was thrashing about in the bed. She has been quite a handful for the nurses, but the good news so far is that she seems to be able to move everything although further testing will be needed to determine if she has lost any motor control. Compared to the other patients I see in the same ward her ongoing movements give us hope (although she's moving so much they have had to restrain her). She even went so far as to pull out the arterial IV in her arm! She certainly seems to be fighting this thing, but we're not sure what path her recovery is going to take yet.

I'm going to cross post this to the other thread about flowers for her so all should be able to get the latest update. If you are interested in further info, email me and I'll send you my cell number.

Thanks for all the support. Her Flyertalk friends are very important to her and I'm sure she'll be blown away when she hears what you folks have been up to.

John, thank you!!! I'm sure you have better things to do with your time, but we're very grateful to you for bringing us up to date.

I think vasospasm is the term you were looking for - and if prayers and best wishes will help ( as amazingly research indicates they do), then we're all behind Jill helping her along!

Thanks again. I'm less than an hour from you (in Hickory). If you need ANYTHING, please give me a yell.

John, your news is bittersweet. Let us hope that our dear Jill does not succumb to anything more. I know that we all appreciate everything that you are doing. I know that she greatly enjoyed visiting you and your wife earlier in the year.

We must be very positive and count each day as it comes. Your Mum was in the USA and has received the best possible care that this world can offer. She stands a very good chance, and for that both Roy and I are praying.

May God grant both you and your brother courage and strength for the next days. i only wish that I were nearer to be of some practical support and assistance. Your mother is a dear friend of us both.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Paul and Roy

John, thanks for taking the time and effort to update us on FT. It is greatly appreciated. And as svpii noted, nonlocal best wishes, good thoughts, prayers, and aloha can work...so be sure that we're all sending that Jill's way!

New update: this afternoon Jill had a drain removed which means that the wound is healing nicely. Her surgeon also said that the fact that she is moving around so much is a good sign.

As to having better things to do, have you ever hung around a hospital waiting room for days? I'm sorry I didn't think to bring my laptop in sooner as I'd spied this unused phone jack a couple days ago. Hopefully nobody from the hospital will catch on and cut me off. I feel almost guilty sitting here surfing and posting when so many families are in such grief. I'm also getting the chance to get to know my brother much better as I left home when he was only five and shortly thereafter the family left CA to move here so we've had limited contact over the years.

While Mom's not out of the woods, her prognosis is much better than many of the other patients in these intensive care units.

Your support is very meaningful and I send thanks to all of you.
