Updated some times in Post 2 for Part 3.

We have a more realistic timeline for the BBQ.

All requests to tour ANC Tower/TRACON have been approved ^

NARL-Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. Mostly a group of Quonset huts linked together by corridors. I stayed there for several weeks when we first opened our store in Barrow. The cafeteria was pretty good back then. Not sure about now. On a clear day you can see the White Alice site behind the complex. They used to have tours of White Alice but I believe it is closed down now. Our store was in Buildings 37-40. 37-39 were warehouses. The store was in building 40. Had to fence it in to keep us safe from the Polar Bears back then, especially in the winter. Hard to see them at night.

It is about 4 miles out of town and features dormitory style accommodations. Plan on taxis to and fro. At one time they were planning to set it up as a college for the local population. Not sure if that is still in place or not.

Take a picture of the place for me for old times sake.

I think it did become a college, and the cafeteria still exists:

Niġġivik is full service cafeteria that is open to students, faculty, staff and the general public. We’re located in the main Iḷisaġvik building at NARL, you’re just 5 minutes away from a tasty and affordable meal! All meals are all-you-can-eat buffet-style .

Each year, students work with kitchen staff to review and revise the menu to ensure the kitchen serves culturally appropriate and appetizing meals.
https://www.ilisagvik.edu/departments/niggivik/

Actually, ha...that might be the cheapest meal in the city.

Hotel room avail?

Reluctantly I have to go from possible to "next year" status... I'll be in Maine with family instead. Too bad as I had a great itinerary on AS booked from Boston, and was looking forward to this trip.

I do have a room reserved at the Tukkumavik suites for one night 6/20/17 if anyone would like to pick that reservation up, PM me. Price was $183.75.
(And it might be a help as I get no response from VM or emails left at their address when I try to cancel...)

Hoping there will be many pictures posted next week, and that you avoid the annual tire-changing ritual this time around

Looks like the current ANC weather is scheduled to be pretty darn good with highs in the 60's and some sun, although hopefully the little rain wont be too bad

Thursday will be

June 22 – Pretty Gritty and Small Souls
Do not miss Pretty Gritty with special guests Small Souls, a pair of Portland folk-rock/americana duos sharing a stage (and members) for a collaborative concert event. Pretty Gritty’s debut album, featuring Keller Williams, won three IMC awards in 2012. Their outstanding live performance has earned them a reputation as one of the more talented artists currently making music in the pacific northwest.

Some of those items include:
  1. Sun Goggles – flat, foldable sunglasses given to travelers to “the land of the midnight sun” in the 1950s.
Yikes. Guess I need to do some last-minute shopping! I didn't think to bring sunglasses, but it sounds like they might be necessary.
