A question about Austin Beerworks.
A couple of years ago at SEADO, we did the tour of the Redhook brewery. Much drinking was done and most left with a generous buzz. The tour was quite long with a trudge from one station to the next, with a different beer to sample at each stop. And I recall, the total walking distance was somewhere around 50 feet. To make this less painful, glasses could be refilled if someone was "on the fence". Will we be subjected to this kind of torture again? If so, I will need to buy new walking shoes prior to the tour.:D And yes, this will be part of my training for the OME DO :o |

Watching him go after what is on offer down there in Texas, especially during the all-you-can eat events, may in itself be worth the price of admission to this DO. :p |

www.segway.com/individual/models/index.php www.thescooterstore.com but beware, I'm pretty sure you can still get a DUI if you imbibe too much:D |

The existence of this interesting concept may be difficult to apply to the poster referred to by Sweet Willie. :D

Chamber of Commerce Weather
In addition to my wide and varied nerdisms, I enjoy all things weather. Knowing that: Long range forecasts indicate that we're to have rather decent weather with highs in the mid 80s on all four days, so plan accordingly. If you're like me (built for the arctic circle), the site of 84 on the forecast makes you cringe, but for you broken folks from the northeast, this should be lovely. ;) The only event with a dress code is the dinner at Perry's on Thursday; shorts are fine the rest of the time. Sun screen is highly recommended for the outdoor events as the Texas sun is no respecter of light complexions. http://www.c-cproductions.org/sa/emo...starsmilie.gif Additionally, for those of you who saw fit to order lunch for the party barge event, we'll be enjoying dessert via cookies from Tiff's Treats, a local Austin bakery that has taken the cookie to new heights. |
Just curious about how the bus transport works, if you are not attending every event. If, for example, one can't stay for the dinner at lake Travis but will be doing the day at the lake, will there be transport back to the Aloft? Or if you are not booked for the Austin beerworks tour Friday morning, will there be a bus to take you to Black's BBQ?

So, if you're not attending some of the events, you should make other transport arrangements to catch up (or depart early as the case may be). |

The bus service is very much an, "all or nothing" sort of thing on a day by day basis. The bus will not make any stops back at the hotel between events, with the stop between Snow's and heading out to the lake the one notable exception. The reason for this is that buses are inordinately expensive and, as such, we only have one.
So, if you're not attending some of the events, you should make other transport arrangements to catch up (or depart early as the case may be). One of us has cleared for the Austin beer works on Friday the other has not. One of us is signed up for the dinner Saturday night, the other is not. So would one of us just have to stay in the waiting room of the beer works on Friday morning and then one of us have to wait outside of Uncle Billy's or what? (assuming we want to take the bus - both of us have cleared for the bus). |
We spent some time yesterday evening enjoying a couple beers and assembling the swag bags which are surprisingly full of...stuff. ;)

And it looks like Pa Kettle does a good job of supervising! |
Looking forward to the event next week. Thank you to our AUS FT friends for organizing another great event.

If you haven't had the opportunity to read this month's feature story in Texas Monthly on Aaron Franklin and John Mueller, I highly recommend it. It will add a bit of background to our visit that I think you'll come to appreciate. Not the least of which is how "the line" has developed its own mores and its own ethics. It is now considered to be "an experience" separate from actually being able to get fed at Franklin BBQ.
So, I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that while 33 of us are going to tour the Amy's Ice Cream factory after breakfast on Thursday morning, there are an additional 19 of you who've registered who have not signed up for it, but said you were going to meet us at Franklin BBQ. If you are one of these 19, I strongly recommend that you queue up at Franklin BBQ no later than 9:30 AM (if not earlier). Bring a folding chair, coffee, a newspaper/book/Kindle/iPod, and whatever else you think you might need for the approximately 3-hour wait. There are still no guarantees that you'll get fed, but the earlier you get there, the better your position will be. For those of us who will be arriving around 10:45 or so, we're going to have to take our chances. It is likely that we will experience the disappointment of not being able to get fed at Franklin BBQ, but we're going to give it a go because...well, you need to experience "the line" like us locals do 6 days a week. Should the late crew get turned away, we'll motor down to The Iron Works as an alternative for lunch. It isn't Franklin BBQ by a long-shot, but it isn't the worst BBQ place by far and away and it's close-by. Pa, what's the line etiquette? If I get there and other Megadoers are already in line, can I just join them? Or will that get me strung up and run out of town for cutting? My arrival time will be at the mercy of Interstate 35... |
