- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

A data point: called retention dept. on Dec. 24 and receive same offers, for both AA Pt Visa Signature and Amex(both opened in Jan. 2013 by 2 browser trick), as following:$95 statement credit and 1,000 miles bonus for $1,000 spend for the next 16 months.

I called Citi retentions a couple days ago and received a $95 statement credit (even though the AF is $85) and the same 1,000 mile bonus for spending $1,000 per month for 16 months for my Citi AA Platinum card. This seems to be the norm these days. I received the same offer earlier on the other card I opened with the 2-browser trick.

I called after the annual fee hit on my Citi AA Platinum Visa card. I was offered a $95 statement credit and up to 1,000 bonus miles per statement cycle for 16 months. I didn't spend much over the spend required to get the signup bonus. This was the same offer I got for my Citi Amex a few weeks ago, and I accepted both offers. In addition, the double miles up to 1,000 will be lucrative enough to get both cards out of my sock drawer unless I am meeting a minimum spend on a new credit card.

TYPremier Retention

Citi ThankYou Premier; retention offer of either 5,000 bonus TY points or $75 statement credit after $1,000 in purchases in 3 months. I'm going to keep the account open to run down my Flight Points balance, but thereafter I don't see this product as being worth the $125 annual fee after the October benefits devaluation.

Couldn't resist

With all the recent offers of 1000mi/$1000 spent per month for 16 months, I decided to give the retentions line a call today.

Voila - got the exact same thing, AND the $95 statement credit as well
I only had the card open since September (~3 months) so wasn't expecting the $95 credit.

The conversation was smooth - I told them I wanted to cancel since I was earning 1.25x miles with another card (*wood). And they asked if I was spending over $1,000 a month on that card and I told them 'easily' (I do MS a bit).

I genuinely thanked them for the offer and told them how much better the Platinum MC was, compared to AMEX now :P
