- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

Called to Cancel my AA Citi Plat Visa Signature (got it 9/2012) After meeting min spend and then taking advantage of a targeted offer, hadn't used the card much. Was told couldn't wait Annual fee, but could provide $95 statement credit, plus 750 bonus AA miles for each month I spend $750 or more dollars for the next 16 cycles. I took the offer I'll call in a few weeks for the Citi Amex.

called citi today to talk to a retention specialist. the phone rep asked me if I was told by someone to ask for a retention offer, said no and then she asked if I was transferred to a retention specialist and they were not able to offer me any incentives, would I consider closing the account, answered yes. was transferred to the retention specialist, was offered two options

1) $95 statement credit + 1000 bonus points for $1000 spend for 16 billing cycles.

2) 3000 points for $500 spend in 3 months.

needless to say, accepted option 1

Citibusiness AA card which I haven't used a single time in the past year:
1) 10k bonus miles after $5k spend in 6 months
2) $50 statement credit

I opted to close the card.

Called yesterday about my AA Amex (opened 10/12 in a 2bm). Encountered serious push-back from the front-line CSR, who seemed way too eager to send me to someone else after noting that "you actually spent some money on the card." The retention specialist pushed back as well, noting that the fee hadn't even posted yet and that I have 37 days after it posts to cancel for a full refund.

In the end, she offered 3000 points for $500 spend in 3 months to "give us a little more time before you decide." I accepted and ended the call quickly.

Clearly, I wasn't saying the correct magic words, so I'll just wait a month and call back about this card (and its Visa twin) after the fee posts next month.

How long does a statement credit normally take to post after meeting the requirements?

I believe it usually posts when your annual fee posts, because they don't want you taking the statement credit and canceling before they can charge the annual fee.

My annual fee has already posted, so that's not the case.

This is false unless you're calling right when your annual fee is due. It should show up on the statement of the when the credit was offered-- Citi can give you the credit well before the fee posts (and you can spend the credit, then cancel the card before the annual fee if given enough time).

Called Citi Retention on my AA Amex Select, funny thing was I got a recording of wait time when I called the number. 'You've reached Citi Retention, the hold time is about 50 seconds, please help Citi in saving this customer'. Obviously this is not a recording the the customer is suppose to hear, but I just found it interesting that this backdoor transfer number has been the same for so long.

Okay unto my offer for my Amex Card. I was offered a $95 statement credit and 1000 Bonus miles with $1K spend for the next 16 cycles. I got the card last September with the 2BM and have probably spend $2K after I met my initial spend.

was considering closing a very infrequently used preferred account because i have a premier card with basically redundant (but better) benefits and i wanted to cut down on the number of citi cards. was offered i think some pretty decent retention offers
1) 10K TYP with $3K spend in 6 months
2) 4X bonus points for groceries, drugstores, gas stations, commuter expenses, garages. 35K cap
3) 2X bonus points on any purchases for i think 6 months? 35K cap

went with option #2 because the extra spend would most likely be in one or two of the included categories of course i also wont go crazy and spend $8750 in those categories the first billing statement given citi's recent shutdowns...

I've had the Citi AA Platinum for four years. I got the $95 statement credit after 5 eligible purchases. I didn't ask for any other offers as that is the one I wanted.
I think that I have gotten the same retention offer every year now. Very nice to have this card with "no annual fee."
The call was very quick and easy - less than 5 minutes. (I called retention directly)
