- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

They'll refund it in full if it was charged in the past 60 days usually. I just called about a TY Premier card a few weeks ago and was offered $125 statement credit for $4500 spend in 3 months.

Thus if you renew and get a retention offer it will not be offered again.

My CIti VISA was re-newed for $1000/3 month offer and I was told it was a one time only offer to renew.
I don't see what that has to do with my post that you quoted I was just expressing that I was offered the same thing as brownie20. However, other posters in this forum have expressed receiving multiple retention offers on the same card over a period of years.

You are correct. You can get a retention offer every six months although they tend to only do statement credits once per year.

Cool. I thought that might be the way to go too.
I don't want to seem to needy/greedy to the reps

Thank you sir

I'm chasing another spend on a recent AOR and cannot take any additional spend offer. So, will cancel.

Another thing, when you call will they ask for Expiration date / CSV code ? Because I dont have the card anymore (but I have 16 digits CC no)

Thanks.

Downgrade it to a no annual fee Citi Dividend card and they will refund you the $125

My annual fee just posted and I'm curious about whether they will make another retention offer this year.
I got the 750 miles for $750/mo and $95 credit last year on my AA Plat. Just called again and they would only give me the $95 credit this year. I don't remember if the offer last year was for 12 or 18 months, but I suspect 18 months. I guess I'll find out based on when the 750 mile credits stop.

Hilton Reserve

This week I've been offered:

a) 2 extra points per dollar at gas stations
b) Downgrade to no-AF Hilton Signature
c) 5000 bonus points after spending $2000
d) 750 bonus points after spending $750 for 16 cycles.

I don't like any of these. I've had the card one year and have only spent $2700. I was offered all of these on 2 different calls to the number on the back of my card: 888-856-4255. Both times that I've called 800-444-2568 this week they have had no offers for me.

My annual fee is September 1st. Do the offers change daily/weekly/monthly?

Any success downgrading TY Premier to Citi Forward?

I will be trying this downgrade next month but wondering if anyone had success downgrading the TY Premier to Forward without being a college student? This seems like the best no annual fee card with 5 points bonus category... If this is not possible, I will probably just cancel the card.
Thanks in advance for any info!

Called and asked for the $95 fee refunded or I might cancel my Citi AAdvantage Visa Platinum. Have had it for ~3 years at this point. They said if I have 5 transactions in 3 months, they'll credit me my $95 fee. Once my credit comes back up from purchasing a house and a car in a year, I'll start an AOR... New job = not much vacation time anyways

Weird conversation with Citi ret. rep., called to cancelled citi AA AMEX card which was opened back in July 12. AF hit and I was hoping to get credit to offset the AF. Offered 3000 AA pts after $500 in purchases in 3 months, I said not interested, then he start digging into my other accounts and mentioned that I have had quite a few AA accounts in the past and 2 most recent one."Was it because of bonuses". I was caught off guard! Tried to convince (unconvincingly) that AMEX is not accepted lot of places as compare to AA Visa but I know it was not very comfortable conversation. Finally able to closed the account after little more grilling.
