- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

Another data point:
Been a Citi AA Visa platinum customer since Feb 2013.
Called today to get some retention offer. They offered my $95 statement credit and 1000 bonus miles (for 1K spending) for the next 16 months.

I have done almost 25K spending on this card, all which has been MS.

Citi AA Plat card 1 year anniv. First call no offer although I admit I should have been more "sure" that I wanted to cancel. Asked how long I had to decide before being responsible for the AF and then said I would call back. Called back 1/2 hour later and stated that I wanted to cancel. Transferred to retention. Said I liked the card but I was not using it as I earned more miles on other cards and that I didn't want to pay the AF on a card that I was not using. Retention rep gave the run down of the bennies of the card then offered $95 statement credit and 500 extra miles w/ $500 spend for next 16 billing cycles. I noticed that he made sure to tell me how the offer addressed both of my stated issues. I took the offer. Thanks to all for the helpful info in this thread.

I'm really curious why so many folks seem reluctant to directly call the retention department?

Excellent point that you were directed to an offer that addressed both of your issues. I think I may use wording more similar to yours in the future.

I found this article helpful: http://thepointstraveler.com/masteri...tention-bonus/ The author says he/she is a former Citi retention rep.

Retention

Called yesterday and said I would cancel due to the $95 fee for my Visa Signature card. Transferred and immediately offered a $95 statement credit if I used the credit card 5 times in the next 3 months. Obviously I took the offer.

im wondering if past retention offers for a Citi card will affect my present chances for a good retention offer on a different Citi card?

e.g. I've a TYPremier about to expire, and then an AAdvantage card earlier next year. I don't care for the new TYP benefits so I'm definitely not going to pay the $125.
If they give me a retention offer for the TYP and I take it, will it affect how 'good' the future retention offer on the AAdvantage card might be? (versus me rejecting the TYP retention offer and cancelling the TYP, and possibly shifting the credit line onto the AAdvantage)

also, anyone else noticed that on their online account, the "Reward Details" link on the left menu no longer appears for their Premier card?

Had been using it to monitor flight points, but that functionality appears to have disappeared.

Because you no longer earn flight points starting 10.20.13 when the current devaluation came in effect. Existing flight points still would be matched until they are depleted. Have you not read the notification on this change that sent out a month or 2 ago?

yep, but i hope that they don't remove the flight points from the statements as well. otherwise, there's not going to be an easy way to track how many flight points i have left. anyway i realise i got a bit OT here, i had meant to post this on the thread about the TYP. sorry guys.

I called last week to cancel my AA platinum visa because the annual fee was due. I was immediately offered a $95 statement credit for using the card 5 times in three months. I took the offer.

I've had the card since 2010 and have gotten a retention offer every year. I also have another AA platinum account open.
